There are about 30 separate reefs and atolls, twelve being wholly submerged or drying only during low tide, and 18 others with a total of about 51 islets and cays ( 18 alone on the atoll Lihou Reef ), some of which are vegetated.

Lihou Reef National Nature Reserve is a 8440 km < sup > 2 </ sup > nature reserve in the Australian Coral Sea Islands Territory.

Lihou Reef and its cays were discovered by Lieutenant John Lihou, R. N., on 23 February 1823.

Lihou Reef is the second largest atoll by total size in the Coral Sea, after the Chesterfield Islands ( not counting the completely submerged Lansdowne Bank in the easternmost reaches of the Coral Sea ).

These are the Western Reef Heron Egretta gularis which occurs on the coastline of West Africa ( Egretta gularis gularis ) and from the Red Sea to India ( Egretta gularis schistacea ), and the Dimorphic Egret Egretta dimorpha, found in East Africa, Madagascar, the Comoros and the Aldabra Islands.

While the Great Barrier Reef with its islands and cays belong to Queensland, most reefs and islets east of it are part of the Coral Sea Islands Territory.

Animals here include Atlantic Puffin in the Sea Cliffs exhibit, Banggai Cardinalfish in the Pacific Coral Reef, and Giant Amazon River Turtle in the Amazon River Forest exhibit.

Since the opening of the area, many live actors roam around the area dressed as pirates. In 2009, a new Sea Life Centre, Sharkbait Reef, opened in the location previously home to the 3-D Cinema.

They are popular attractions for ecotourist divers in the Red Sea, off the Maldives, off Thailand's Phuket and Phi Phi islands, on the Great Barrier Reef, and elsewhere.
