Companies that are completely independent, such as Lionsgate, also produce mainstream films, from a cultural standpoint, but independent of the studio system.

The network also has rights to many films not released by Disney ( either because the studio does not have a children's network or has one that is incompatible with their focus ), such as Warner Bros .' ( Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone ( known in the US as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets ), Universal Pictures ( Beethoven, An American Tail, The Land Before Time ), The Weinstein Company ( Hoodwinked, The Magic Roundabout ), Sony Pictures ( Stuart Little, Stuart Little 2, Hook ), Lionsgate ( Happily N ' ever After ), 20th Century Fox ( Ice Age, the Home Alone film series, Catch That Kid ), Paramount ( Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown ( and Don't Come Back !!)).

Paramount now also owns the theatrical rights, while Lionsgate Entertainment ( Republic's video licensee and successor to Artisan Entertainment, previously LIVE Entertainment ) holds the home video rights, and Trifecta Entertainment & Media now holds most major TV rights on behalf of Republic / Paramount ( aside from other major and minor / low budget film, TV, and video companies that distribute the public domain cartoons )-- CBS Television Distribution ( as well as its predecessor companies Paramount Domestic Television and Worldvision Enterprises ) formally held such TV rights until 2009.

Cinemax ( through HBO ) also shows sub-runs ( runs of films that have already received broadcast network / syndicated television releases ) of theatrical films from Paramount Pictures ( usually those released prior to 1997 ), Universal Pictures, Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group ( including Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures and Miramax ), Sony Pictures Entertainment ( including Columbia Pictures and TriStar Pictures ), Twentieth Century Fox ( select films from all five studios are shared with Starz and Encore ), Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, DreamWorks Pictures ( those made prior to the 2010 shift of film distribution rights from Paramount to Touchstone Pictures ), and Lionsgate Entertainment.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has released all 6 seasons of The Dead Zone on DVD in Region 1, while CBS Home Entertainment ( distributed by Paramount ) has also released all 6 seasons in Region 2.

Lionsgate, along with MGM and Paramount Pictures / Viacom, is also a co-owner of Epix, a new pay TV movie channel which debuted on October 30, 2009 on Verizon FiOS IPTV systems, that will rival HBO and Showtime.

Lionsgate also recently acquired TV syndication firm Debmar-Mercury in 2006 with 20th Television handling ad-sales with the exception for Meet the Browns, as the ad-sales are handled by Disney-ABC Domestic Television and Turner Television co-distributing the series.

Lionsgate also distributes select NBC programs such as Will & Grace, Little House on the Prairie and The Biggest Loser ; Mattel's Barbie-branded videos and Clifford the Big Red Dog videos from the Scholastic Corporation and is also the current home video distributor of HiT Entertainment titles, including Barney & Friends, Thomas and Friends and Fraggle Rock.

Also, Universal owns through NBC the rights to the 1957 Elvis Presley film Loving You, also originally by Paramount ( Lionsgate owns US DVD rights ).

Slaughter High was released a third time on DVD in 2012 by Lionsgate in an eight horror film DVD set which also includes Class of 1999, Waxwork, 976-Evil II, The Unholy, C. H. U. D.

The 2005 DVD release was released by Anchor Bay Entertainment, now known as Starz Home Entertainment, under license from the film's current owner, StudioCanal ; however, the current, 25th Anniversary home video release ( which also now includes Blu-ray ) is by Lionsgate Home Entertainment, again under StudioCanal's license.

Two large independent firms also qualify as mini-majors, Lionsgate and The Weinstein Company.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment also currently distributes videos from HIT Entertainment, MGA Entertainment, and Jim Henson Home Entertainment.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment also operated two subsidiaries in its early heyday: Avalanche Home Entertainment, which released smaller Canadian B-movies on video and DVD ; and Sterling Home Entertainment ( a joint venture with Scanbox International, a Danish film company ), which released American low-budget movies, as well as DiC Entertainment's back catalogue ( before distribution of this library is shifted to Shout!

* The 1978 film adaptation of Death on the Nile is now owned by StudioCanal ( the successor company to original producer EMI Films )-- StudioCanal has licensed DVD rights to Lionsgate, after some years of being distributed by Anchor Bay Entertainment.

* Lionsgate now controls most rights to the 1987 Vietnam War film Hamburger Hill through an equity investment Vestron Video made with its production outfit RKO Pictures, though Paramount retains TV and Internet rights.

Working with independent studios such as the now-shuttered Fine Line, Artisan ( which was absorbed into today's Lionsgate ), and USA Films ( now Focus Features ), gave Altman the edge in making the kinds of films he has always wanted to make without studio interference.

* Ancillary rights to The Final Countdown are now with Lionsgate ( successor-in-interest to Producers Sales Organization ), however the video rights are held by Blue Underground.

* Selected Cannon films inherited through its merger with Thorn EMI Screen Entertainment, such as Link, are now with EMI successor StudioCanal ; Anchor Bay Entertainment handled the US home-video rights until 2010, when StudioCanal made a new deal with Lionsgate.

The Lions Gate Studios property in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada was sold to a private company, Bosa Developments, and is now called North Shore Studios, and no longer have an affiliation with Lionsgate Entertainment.

The former Lionsgate office located in Toronto is now owned by Maple Pictures ( basically the spiritual successor for the original Lions Gate ), the distribution arm of Alliance Films, a major Canadian motion picture distribution / production company, resulting in Lions Gate's demerger into two companies, Lionsgate ( the American company formerly known as Artisan ) and Maple Pictures ( the Canadian company formerly known as Lions Gate ).

* Lionsgate now holds North American home video rights to Little House on the Prairie, a former Worldvision property now issued on DVD under license from NBC Universal.

* Paramount owns the film libraries of many other companies that were absorbed into Republic ( see the Republic Pictures and Spelling Entertainment articles for more info ), again with DVD rights licensed to Lionsgate ;

( Lionsgate Home Entertainment, under license from Republic, owns the video rights to the Boop cartoons ).

Today, Lionsgate ( Vestron's successor company ) owns full rights to the movie except domestic television distribution, which under contract is handled by Warner Bros.

Also, Lionsgate owns some ancillary rights to Wagons East !.

NBC licensed television syndication rights to NBCUniversal Television Distribution and US video distribution to Lionsgate.

US intellecutal property rights are owned by Lionsgate, as successor-in-interest to Canadian-financed films by producers John Dunning & Andre Link and their company Cinepix ; Lionsgate has in turn licensed DVD rights to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Away from Her was acquired by Lionsgate for release in the US for the sum of $ 750, 000.
