In the 14th century, the Lords of Wezemaal and Rotselaar managed to detract Werchter ( and Haacht ) from the sphere of influence of the House of the Berthouts, thus uniting the three villages of Wezemaal, Werchter and Rotselaar for the first time in history, which from that moment on together formed the Land, or the Barony of Rotselaar.

Just after the collapse of the South Sea Bubble, for which he was partly responsible but from which he did not profit, the earl was defending his government with customary vigour and panache in House of Lords on 4 February 1721 when he was taken ill with a violent headache.

When professional head of the Royal Navy was given the name of First Naval Lord in 1828 ( renamed First Sea Lord in 1904 ), the rank of Admiral of the Fleet became an honorary promotion for retiring First Naval Lords allowing more than one Admiral of the Fleet to exist at one time.
