The Lorica Segmentata has come to be viewed as synonymous with the Roman legions in pop culture depictions.

The legions of the Roman Republic and Empire wore fairly standardised dress and armour, particularly from approximately 40 AD onward, when Lorica Segmentata ( segmented armour ) was introduced.

He recalls, " I wrote to her suggesting that she should fill a gap in our Irish Church Hymnal by giving us a metrical version of St. Patrick's ' Lorica ' and I sent her a carefully collated copy of the best prose translations of it.

Cataphracts were almost universally clad in some form of scale armor ( Falidotos, equivalent to the Roman Lorica squamata ) that was flexible enough to give the rider and horse a good degree of motion, but strong enough to resist the immense impact of a thunderous charge into infantry formations.

The 1st century Roman road and two bridges ( the second was destroyed in the 17th century after flooding ) connected the outpost of Lorica to the rest of their Lusitanian province.

Lorica squamata is an ancient Roman armour of this type and gyorin kozane is the Japanese ( samurai ) name for this type of scale armour.

Gildas is credited with a hymn called the Lorica, or Breastplate, a prayer for deliverance from evil, which contains specimens of Hiberno-Latin.

St Gildas, the Welsh author of the De excidio Britonum, is also credited with the Lorica, or Breastplate, an apotropaic charm against evil that is written in a curiously learned vocabulary ; this too probably relates to an education in the Irish styles of Latin.

Marcus Cornelius Fronto described the large gaping wounds that a falx inflicted, and experiments have shown that a blow from a falx easily penetrated the Romans ' Lorica segmentata, incapacitating the majority of victims.

The legions also reintroduced the wearing of Lorica hamata and Lorica squamata for the Dacia campaign as both were more flexible than the newer segmentata armour and were able to distribute damage more widely.

The limitanei were the lighter and less experienced of these two groups, armed primarily with spears and clad in Lorica hamata, and designated with the task of harassing or delaying invading enemies and otherwise buying time for a larger, more capable force of comitatenses to arrive and destroy an invading force.
