BMW and Ford had previously retained ownership of the Rover brand to protect the integrity of the Land Rover brand, with which ' Rover ' might be confused in the US 4x4 market ; the Rover brand was originally used under license by MG Rover until it collapsed in 2005, at which point it was re-acquired by the then Ford Motor Company owned Land Rover Limited.

After an interval of barely one year, the MG marque was revived again, this time on the MG RV8 – an updated MGB Roadster with a Rover V8 engine, which was produced in low volumes.

The MG marque passed, along with the Rover marque, to the MG Rover group in May 2000, when BMW " broke up " the Rover Group.

However, all production ceased in April 2005 when MG Rover went into administration.

The assets of MG Rover were bought by Chinese carmaker Nanjing Automobile in July 2005 ( subsequently bought by SAIC in December 2007 ), who now operate a UK subsidiary, MG Motor.

The MG Car Company Limited was a former British sports car manufacturer founded in the 1920s by Cecil Kimber.

The MG Car Company got its name from Morris Garages, a dealer of Morris cars in Oxford which began producing its own customised versions to the designs of Cecil Kimber, who had joined the company as its sales manager in 1921.

MG was absorbed with Morris into The British Motor Corporation Limited, created in 1952 to merge Morris Motors Limited and The Austin Motor Company Limited.

As of 1 July 1935 Morris Motors acquired from W R Morris, now Lord Nuffield, in exchange for a further issue of ordinary shares to him, the car manufacturing businesses of Wolseley Motors Limited and The MG Car Company Limited.

On 14 July 2005, it was reported that Magma Holdings, a financial group including former Ford Motor Company and General Motors executives, working in conjunction with SAIC, would be making an offer for the assets of both MG Rover and engine maker Rover Powertrain which, if successful, would see at least some production being restarted at Longbridge, and that talks with the other two interested parties – China's Nanjing Automobile Group and Project Kimber ( a consortium of Birmingham businessmen led by David James ) – were still in progress.

An MG version of the car was introduced in May 1961 as, ' the new Midget ,' reviving a model name which had been a great success for the MG Car Company in the 1930s.

Alchemy intended to name the company the MG Car Company, selling the MG F roadster and possibly developing additional, limited production sports cars.

Originally designed by Donald Healey and his team, the car may have started life as an Austin-Healey Sprite, but was always manufactured by the MG Car Company at its factory in Abingdon, Berkshire.

In December 1936, the regiment was redesignated as The Kent Regiment ( MG ) when it amalgamated with B Company, 2nd Machine Gun Battalion, CMGC.

On April 29, relieved Major Waller in Command of 81st Company when Major Waller was transferred to the 3rd Division to command the 8th MG Battalion.

The Austin, Morris and Wolseley marques were later sold to MG Rover Group Ltd, on 10 December 2003.

The K-Series engine is a series of engines built by Powertrain Ltd, a sister company of MG Rover.

SAIC Motor had previously acquired some intellectual property rights from MG Rover, so the Chinese Government merged the two companies together, which resulted in the rebirth of MG as MG Motor UK Ltd.

Nanjing Auto acquired some assets of MG Rover Group and Powertrain Ltd in 2005 after the group had entered administration.
