In the UK, Master's degrees may be taught or by research: taught Master's include the MSc and MA degrees which last 1 year and are worth 180 CATS credits ( equivalent to 90 ECTS European credits ), whereas the Master's by research degrees include the MRes ( Master of Research ) which also lasts 1 year and worths 180 CATS or 90 ECTS credits ( the difference compared to the MA / MSc being that the research is much more extensive ), and the MPhil ( Master of Philosophy ) degree which lasts 2 years.

However, the MD / DM research degree often requires a shorter period of study than, for example, a PhD and is considered to be more on par with an MPhil than a doctorate proper ( e. g. the University of Manchester ); it can simply consist of the submission of a number of multi-authored publications, where authorial responsibility is unclear.

The BPhil / MPhil is a part-taught, part-research degree which is often a stepping stone to the DPhil.

A full choice of subjects up to research opportunities including ( MA incorporating PG Cert / PG Dip ) and specialist MPhil and PhD are available.

The postgraduate programme includes an MA ( csad ) MDes, MFA, and MPhil / PhD and Professional Doctorates in Art and also Design, which can be taken in any of the Schools subject areas, as well as MA Ceramics, MSc Advanced Product Design.

Foreign students can attend the HKU as a regular student, an exchange student in programmes such as Socrates / Erasmus, a bilateral exchange programme or as an MA, MPhil or PhD student.

Over three-quarters of St Edmund's students are studying towards higher degrees, usually the PhD, MPhil or LLM degrees.

PhD doctorate candidates shall preferably hold a Master of Sciences / Research degree prior to entering doctoral cursus.
