He used this knowledge while working on the Bolton and Leigh Railway, and the Liverpool and Manchester Railway ( L & MR ), executing a series of difficult cuts, embankments and stone viaducts to smooth the route the railways took.

The B & ER had a goods depot at Pylle Hill ( south of the station ) from 1850 ; and the MR had an independent yard at Avonside Wharf on the opposite side of the Floating Harbour from 1858.

The capital costs of the new work were split 4 / 14 GWR / B & ER and 10 / 14 MR.

The ongoing costs were split GWR 3 / 8, MR 3 / 8 and B & ER 2 / 8.

Hence when the GWR absorbed the B & ER in 1876 the split was GWR 5 / 8 and MR ( later LMS ) 3 / 8 until nationalisation on 1 January 1948.

From March to September 1884 the SER service ran from Addiscombe to St Mary's ( MR & MDR Joint Station ).

After the UERL and the Metropolitan Railway ( MR ) were brought under public control in the form of the London Passenger Transport Board ( LPTB ) in 1933, the MR's subsidiary, the Great Northern & City Railway, which ran from Moorgate to Finsbury Park, became part of the Underground as the Northern City Line.

The station name Notting Hill Gate had potential for confusion with the MR station to the north in Ladbroke Grove which was known as " Notting Hill " when opened in 1864, and renamed " Notting Hill & Ladbroke Grove " in 1880.

The Liverpool and Manchester Railway ( L & MR ) was the world's first twin-track inter-city passenger railway in which all the trains were timetabled and ticketed.

The L & MR

The L & MR was intended to achieve cheap transport of raw materials, finished goods and passengers between the Port of Liverpool, and east Lancashire, in the port's hinterland.

The L & MR had sought to de-emphasise the use of steam locomotives during the passage of the bill, the public having become alarmed at the idea of these monstrous machines which, if they did not explode, would fill the countryside with noxious fumes.

There was thus a division in the L & MR board between those who supported Stephenson's " loco-motive " and those who favoured cable haulage, the latter supported by the opinion of the engineer, John Rastrick.

Notwithstanding the unfortunate start to its career, the L & MR was very successful.

In 1845 the L & MR was absorbed by its principal business partner, the Grand Junction Railway ( GJR ); the following year the GJR formed part of the London and North Western Railway.

The L & MR developed the practice of red signals for stop, green for caution and white for clear, which spread by the early 1840s to other railways in Britain and the United States.

The L & MR was also responsible for the gauge of, which came to be used more or less universally.

In an extensive literature review, recognition of the AKA using CT and / or MR was achieved in 466 of 555 cases ( 83. 96 %) and in 384 ( 83. 3 %) cases the AKA originated from a left intercostal artery.
