The Design Academy Eindhoven has produced major Dutch designers, such as Maarten Baas, Marcel Wanders, Richard Hutten, Jurgen Bey, and Hella Jongerius.

The house of Maarten van Rossum, a general serving Duke Charles van Gelre, has been the town hall since 1830: The satyrs in its Renaissance ornamentation earned it the name Duivelshuis (" devil's house ").

The rest of the Netherlands Antilles was dissolved on 10 October 2010, with Curaçao and Sint Maarten becoming two new constituent countries and with the other islands becoming special municipalities within the Netherlands.

Dutch colonization in the Caribbean started in the 1620s on St. Croix and Tobago ( 1628 ), followed in 1631 with settlements on Tortuga ( now Île Tortue ) and Sint Maarten.

The Caribbean islands of Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba are dependencies of the Netherlands.

The ABC islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao are in the Leeward Antilles just off the Venezuelan coast, and the SSS islands of Sint Maarten, Saba, and Sint Eustatius are in the Leeward Islands southeast of the Virgin Islands.

Curaçao and Bonaire are south of Caribbean hurricane belt and are rarely threatened ; Sint Maarten, Saba, and Sint Eustatius are subject to hurricanes from July to October.

English is the most commonly spoken language on Sint Maarten, Saba, and Sint Eustatius.
