Sometimes, by means of this magic, one human form can be amalgamated with another, as in the instance of the wife of Marpa, guru of Milarepa, who ended her life by incorporating herself in the body of Marpa.

Upon his return to Tibet, Marpa spent many years translating Buddhist scriptures and made a major contribution to the transmission of the complete buddhadharma to Tibet.

The first, the Dagpo Kagyu, encompasses those Kagyu schools that trace back to the Indian master Naropa via Marpa, Milarepa and Gampopa and consists of four major sub-sects: the Karma Kagyu, headed by a Karmapa, the Tsalpa Kagyu, the Barom Kagyu, and Pagtru Kagyu.

Atiśa Dīpaṃkara Śrījñāna ( Ôtish Dipôngkor Srigên, IAST: ; ) ( 980 – 1054 CE ) was a Buddhist teacher from the Pala Empire who, along with Konchog Gyalpo and Marpa, was one of the major figures in the establishment of the Sarma lineages in Tibet after the repression of Buddhism by King Langdarma ( Glang Darma ).

The ' Profound Action ' lineage originated with Maitreya and Asanga and was introduced to Tibet by Marpa and Atisha.

" The mindstream communion affected by the wife of Marpa in the abovementioned quotation, is an ancient mode of mind transmission ( Tibetan: dgongs brgyud ) or empowerment ( Tibetan: dbang bskur ) in the Himalayan traditions, documented in the folklore and anthropological studies of Himalayan and Siberian Shamanism.

It was then that Naropa prophesied that a family lineage would not continue for Marpa, but that his lineage would be carried on by his disciples.

Many subsequent Kagyu Karmapas have been particularly adept at one or more of these six yogic practices, which in Vajrayana tradition are held to have been given by the Buddha and were passed on through an unbroken lineage via Tilopa to Naropa, Marpa and Milarepa and on to the present day.

The source of the oral lineage, traditionally traced back to the Buddha Vajradhara, was transmitted to the Indian master of mahamudra and tantra called Tilopa ( 989-1069 ), through Naropa ( 1016 – 1100 ) to Marpa and Milarepa.

Marpa introduced the lineage to the Kagyu school and Atisha to the Kadam school, which later produced the Gelug school.

Marpa introduced to Tibet the ' Profound Blessing Meditation Experience ' lineage that is believed to have originated with the primordial Buddha Vajradhara and was passed to Tilopa and Naropa.

Marpa also introduced a mahāmudrā lineage that traced back through Saraha and Maitripa.

Many of the early Buddhist teachers in the Karma Kagyu tradition used the word ' Lama ' as a term of address, including Marpa and Milarepa, in their songs to their teachers, who had not gone on three year retreats.

This brings him into conflict with not just Islam but also, sometimes, with old-fashioned Buddhism ..." Yet several well-known Vajrayana Buddhist lamas were married: Marpa the translator is said to have had nine wives ; others had romantic relationships, including the 6th Dalai Lama, and the teacher who brought Buddhism to Tibet, Padmasambhava, who had five Tantric consorts who were also his students.

He was a student of Marpa Lotsawa, and a major figure in the history of the Kagyu ( Bka '- brgyud ) school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Knowing that his revenge was wrong, Milarepa set out to find a lama and was led to Marpa the translator.

Marpa proved a hard taskmaster.

Before Marpa would teach Milarepa he had him build and then demolish three towers in turn.

When Marpa still refused to teach Milarepa he went to Marpa's wife, who took pity on him.

Marpa Lotsawa ( 1012 – 1097 ), sometimes known fully as Lhodak Marpa Choski Lodos or commonly as Marpa the Translator, was a Tibetan Buddhist teacher credited with the transmission of many Vajrayana teachings from India, including the teachings and lineages of Mahamudra.

Although some accounts relate that the Mahasiddha Naropa was the personal teacher of Marpa, other accounts suggest that Marpa held Naropa's lineage through intermediary disciples only.
