In the UK, the opera was first presented at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden on 19 May 1894 with Arturo Pessina in the title role, while the US premiere was at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, on 4 February 1895 with Victor Maurel as Falstaff.

After some revisions between 1853 and May 1854, mostly affecting acts 2 and 3, the opera was presented again in Venice, this time at the Teatro San Benedetto.

Its first performance in Vienna was at the Kärtnertortheater on 14 May 1843, a production in which Donizetti participated and added the comic baritone duet " Cheti, cheti, immantinente " from a discarded portion of his unperformed opera L ' ange de Nisida.

This dispute originated in a disagreement over the production of his Giovanna d ' Arco in 1845 ; however the composer later conducted his Requiem there on 25 May 1874 and he announced in 1886 that La Scala would host the premiere of his penultimate opera Otello.

Sadler's Wells opera presented an English version by Geoffrey Dunn beginning on 16 May 1960.

Listings in The New York Times and other sources for May 1923 reveal at least 20 dramatic offerings were scheduled ( including one-acts, excerpts from longer dramas, complete three-and four-act plays, operettas and a Molière adaptation ), either as in-studio productions or by remote broadcast from local theaters and opera houses.

In this version the opera was accepted, probably in May 1872, and three excerpts were staged at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1873.

In May 2009, Houston Grand Opera premiered a two act opera Brief Encounter based on the story, with music by André Previn from a libretto by John Caird.
