In 1887 Peirce spent part of his inheritance from his parents to buy of rural land near Milford, Pennsylvania, which never yielded an economic return.
Originally an outgrowth of Knight and Wilhelm's Milford Writers ' Conference, held at their home in Milford, Pennsylvania, USA, it was founded in 1968 by Robin Scott Wilson at Clarion State College in Pennsylvania.

Milford was incorporated as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 15, 1911, from portions of Holland Township, based on the results of a referendum held on May 8, 1911.

The name " Delford " was a portmanteau created from the names of two communities within the new borough: Oradell and New Milford.
In addition to the original town, 1932 saw a major expansion of the borough, to add Milton ( previously an urban district ) and the parishes of Milford on Sea and Pennington, and parts of other parishes, from Lymington Rural District-this extended the borough west along the coast to the border with Christchurch.

It is also located about twenty-two miles north-west of Milford, the County Seat of Government of Pike County.
