Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service primarily operating the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, and the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service flying the Nakajima Ki-27 and the Nakajima Ki-43, initially enjoyed great success, as these fighters generally had better range, maneuverability, speed and climb rates than their Allied counterparts.

However, the zaibatsu ( Japan's family-controlled industrial conglomerates ) were ordered to be dismantled by the Allied powers in 1950, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was split into three regional companies, each with an involvement in motor vehicle development: West Japan Heavy-Industries, Central Japan Heavy-Industries, and East Japan Heavy-Industries.

The name Triton is associated in modern industry with tough hard-wearing machines such as the Ford Triton engine and Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck.

The Mitsubishi group of companies form a loose entity, the Mitsubishi Keiretsu, which is often referenced in Japanese and US media and official reports ; in general these companies all descend from the zaibatsu of the same name.

In 1873, its name was changed to Mitsubishi Shokai.

The name Mitsubishi ( 三菱 consists of two parts: " mitsu " meaning " three " and " hishi " ( which becomes " bishi " under rendaku ) meaning " water caltrop " ( also called " water chestnut "), and hence " rhombus ", which is reflected in the company's famous logo.

After the expiration of Sony's Trinitron patent, manufacturers like Mitsubishi ( whose monitor production is now part of NEC Display Solutions ) were free to use the Trinitron design for their own product line without license from Sony although they could not use the Trinitron name.

Throughout its life, every model in the Eagle brand name was a badge engineered vehicle, as either a Mitsubishi or other Chrysler product.

The name Mitsubishi is a portmanteau of mitsu (" three ") and hishi ( literally, " water chestnut ", often used in Japanese to denote a diamond or rhombus ).

Today, it most commonly refers to the Mitsubishi Colt subcompact in the company's line-up, but is also the name of MMC's import / distribution company in the United Kingdom, the Colt Car Company, established in 1974.

Imation mainly sold Matsushita-built drives under the SuperDisk name ; other companies tended to use the LS-120 name, and sold the Mitsubishi drives.

The name came from the parent companies ' respective logos: three diamonds ( Mitsubishi ) and a pentastar ( Chrysler ).

In 1964, the three independent companies of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, decentralized in 1950, were merged again into one company under the name of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., and the Nagasaki works was renamed the Nagasaki Shipyard & Engine Works.

However, it is Mitsubishi Materials, loosely affiliated with other Japanese companies of the Mitsubishi name, that dominates industry on the island, as Naoshima has been the site of massive refining by Mitsubishi since 1917.

* 1942 – World War II: An American pilot spots a downed, intact Mitsubishi A6M Zero on Akutan Island ( the " Akutan Zero ") that the US Navy uses to learn the aircraft's flight characteristics.

* September 19 – 22 – Imperial Japanese Navy Mitsubishi A5M (" Claude ") fighters conduct a successful campaign to eliminate Chinese air resistance over Nanking.

* December 9 – During combat over Nanchang, an Imperial Japanese Navy Mitsubishi A5M (" Claude ") fighter loses a third of its right wing when it is rammed by a Nationalist Chinese Curtiss Hawk, but flies back to base without further mishap.

The second generation ( or " 2G ") Eagle Talon was introduced in 1995 simultaneously with its Mitsubishi Eclipse counterpart, while the Plymouth Laser model was eliminated.
