Eliza Rosanna Gilbert, Countess of Landsfeld ( 17 February 1818 – 17 January 1861 ), better known by the stage name Lola Montez, was an Irish dancer and actress who became famous as a " Spanish dancer ", courtesan and mistress of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, who made her Countess of Landsfeld.

Her London debut as " Lola Montez, the Spanish dancer " in June 1843 was successful, but she had been recognized as Mrs. James and a scandal arose over the imposture.

In March 1848, under pressure from a growing revolutionary movement, the university was re-opened, Ludwig abdicated, and Montez fled Bavaria, her career as a power behind the throne at an end.

In November 1859, the < I > Philadelphia Press </ i > reported that Lola Montez was " living very quietly up town, and doesn't have much to do with the world's people.

* Montez was portrayed by Martine Carol in the film Lola Montès ( 1955 ), based on the novel La Vie Extraordinaire de Lola Montès by Cecil Saint-Laurent, directed by Max Ophüls and co-starring Peter Ustinov and Oskar Werner.

* Despite critical acclaim, the 1958 Australian musical " Lola Montez " was short-lived.

* Montez was allegedly the inspiration for Jennifer Wilde's historical romance novel Dare To Love ( 1978 ), whose protagonist Elena Lopez is also a British woman passing herself off as Spanish who becomes an exotic dancer.

* It has been asserted that the character " Lola " in the musical Damn Yankees was inspired by Lola Montez, but there is no evidence for this.

The JSA member Wildcat was briefly replaced by his god-daughter, Yolanda Montez.

On 16 March 1848 it was followed by renewed unrest because Lola Montez had returned to Munich after a short exile.

The son was named Romelo Montez Hill, named after Monica's younger brother.

Abel was dismissed from power on 17 February 1847 when he and the other ministers opposed the naturalisation of the Kings ' young lady Lola Montez.

In the books, Douglas strongly implies that Irene's birth mother was Lola Montez and her father possibly Ludwig I of Bavaria.

She was later developed into the future Infinitor, the second Wildcat ( Yolanda Montez ).

The dance was also referred to in Connie Francis ' 1962 hit " V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N " ("... we'll Mashed Potato to a jukebox tune ..."), " Do You Love Me " by The Contours, " Let's Dance " by Chris Montez, " Harry the Hairy Ape " a 1963 Top-20 pop and R & B novelty hit by Ray Stevens, and " Land of a Thousand Dances ".

Maria Montez ( June 6, 1912 – September 7, 1951 ) was a Dominican-born motion picture actress who gained fame and popularity in the 1940s as an exotic beauty starring in a series of filmed-in-Technicolor costume adventure films.

In 1976 Margarita Vicens de Morales publishes a series of articles in the Dominican newspaper Listin Diario, in its magazine called Suplemento, where she presented the results of the research she was carrying out in order to get to the real life story of Maria Montez, which leads her to visit the various sources in different countries where the eminent Dominican actress María Montez lived and acted, culminating that research in 1992 with the publication of the biography " Maria Montez, Su Vida ".

In 1995 Maria Montez is awarded the International Posthumous Cassandra, which was received by Tina Aumont ( her only daughter ) from the hands of the Dominican biographer of Maria Montez, Licda.

When she moved to Universal Studios, she was used as a B-movie version of Maria Montez, one of the studio's reigning divas.

Most of the films, like the Maria Montez vehicle White Savage ( 1943 ), were B-movie musicals ; the most notable was Arthur Lubin's Phantom of the Opera ( 1943 ).

Other characters have taken Grant ’ s name and identity, including the deceased Yolanda Montez, his goddaughter who took over while he was injured.

Among the other actresses to don the sarong for film roles are Maria Montez, Gilda Gray, Myrna Loy, Gene Tierney, Frances Farmer and Movita.

An American film version of the story was released during 1949 under the title Siren of Atlantis, starring María Montez.

From 1851 to 1853, she performed as a dancer and actress in the eastern United States, one of her offerings being a play called Lola Montez in Bavaria.

The restored Home of Lola Montez went on to become California Historical Landmark No. 292.
