Forced to realize that this was the end of a very short line I scanned a road marker and discovered what the end of a slightly longer line would be for the old Mexican: Moriarty, New Mexico.

* Moriarty by Modem, a short story by Jack Nimersheim, describes an alternate history where Babbage's Analytical Engine was indeed completed and had been deemed highly classified by the British government.

The Moriarty Tribunal has sat since 1997 and has investigated the granting of a mobile phone license to Esat Telecom by Michael Lowry when he was Fine Gael Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications in the Rainbow Coalition of the mid-1990s.

Lowry resigned from the Cabinet after it was revealed at the Moriarty Tribunal that businessman Ben Dunne had paid for an IR £ 395, 000 extension to Lowry's Tipperary home.

Following revelations at the Moriarty Tribunal on 16 February 1999, in relation to Charles Haughey and his relationship with AIB, former Taoiseach Garret Fitzgerald confirmed that AIB and Ansbacher wrote off debts of almost £ 200, 000 that he owed in 1993, when he was in financial difficulties because of the collapse of the aircraft leasing company, GPA, in which he was a shareholder.

Moriarty was disciplined for this action by then-commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis.

When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle killed off his most-beloved character Sherlock Holmes by plunging him to his death over the Reichenbach Falls with his arch nemesis Professor Moriarty, the public's demand for Holmes was so great that Doyle was compelled to bring him back to life in a subsequent story, where he details that Holmes had merely faked his death.

When the characters Dean Moriarty, Marylou and Ed Dunkel leave Denver, Kerouac writes that they " roared east along Colfax and out to the Kansas plains " — this was before the construction of Interstate 70.

Doyle lifted the phrase from a real Scotland Yard inspector who was referring to Adam Worth, one of the real life models of Moriarty.

The character of Moriarty as Holmes's greatest enemy was introduced primarily as a narrative device to enable Conan Doyle to kill off Sherlock Holmes, and only featured directly in two of the Sherlock Holmes stories.

Holmes, by his own account, was originally led to Moriarty by the suggestion that many of the crimes he perceived were not the spontaneous work of random criminals but the machinations of a vast and subtle criminal ring.

Moriarty plays a direct role in only one other of Doyle's Holmes stories, The Valley of Fear, which was set before " The Final Problem " but published afterwards.

More obliquely, a 1908 mystery by Doyle that was named " The Lost Special " features a criminal genius who could be Moriarty and a detective who could be Holmes, although neither is mentioned by name.

In " The Empty House ", Holmes states that Moriarty had commissioned a powerful air gun from a blind German mechanic ( one Mr. von Herder ), which was used by his employee Colonel Sebastian Moran.

Doyle's original motive in creating Moriarty was evidently his intention to kill Holmes off.

* In the BBC Radio November 4, 1992 broadcast of " The Final Problem " and the February 24th 1993 broadcast of " The Empty House ", Moriarty was played by Michael Pennington.

* In the 2003 film The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, an adaptation of the graphic novel by Alan Moore, Richard Roxburgh portrays the main villain named the Fantom, whose true identity was eventually revealed to be Professor James Moriarty, who also posed as the League's recruiter M ; with a blackmailed Dorian Gray as his agent, Moriarty acquired samples from the League with the intention of duplicating their powers for his own goals.

During the film he attempts to provoke a war using advanced weaponry that he has developed ( Moriarty was perpetrating a similar scheme as the Fantom in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen ).

The body of the original Moriarty was still covered in ice behind the waterfall he fell from during his battle with Holmes.

* In the Soviet series of television films The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson by Igor Maslennikov, Moriarty was played by Viktor Yevgrafov and voiced by Oleg Dahl in the second film of the series.

* In the Russian 2012 TV series of Sherlock Holmes by Andrey Kavun, Professor Moriarty was played by Ukrainian actor, Alexey Gorbunov.

Moriarty only appeared in one book because, quite simply, having him constantly escape would discredit Holmes, and would be less satisfying.

Higgins also portrayed Holmes in the 1993 TV film Sherlock Holmes Returns, making him one of the only two actors to portray both Holmes and Moriarty on film, Richard Roxburgh being the other.

Roxburgh also portrayed Holmes in the 2002 TV adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles, making him one of the only two actors to portray both Holmes and Moriarty on film, Anthony Higgins being the other.

Dr. Watson mentions Moriarty, suggesting that he might be the one responsible for stealing the souls of women ( the real culprit is Jim Craddock ).

This is one of many works to seize on the fact that Moriarty never actually shows his face in the Holmes canon.

* Philip José Farmer's Science Fiction / Steampunk parallel novel The Other Log of Phileas Fogg asserts that Moriarty and Jules Verne's Captain Nemo were one and the same person.

In a scene in the comedy film The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes ' Smarter Brother the character Moriarty invites a henchman to leave by one of two doors --- one red, the other blue --- behind which he hears a woman and a tiger, respectively.

According to the Moriarty Tribunal report, the next day, on May 8, 1990, £ 206, 613. 57 was withdrawn from one NCB account, converted into sterling £ 200, 000 and transferred to the Aurum Nominees No. 6 account at NCB ( proxied to an offshore Ansbacher Cayman account ) held for the benefit of then Taoiseach, Charles Haughey.

The investigation of payments to Lowry is one of the remits of the Moriarty Tribunal which sat from 1997 to 2011.

In March 2011 the second and final report from the Moriarty Tribunal found that, during his time as Communications Minister, Michael Lowry assisted businessman Denis O ' Brien's consortium Esat Digiphone in acquiring a lucrative mobile phone licence in the mid-90s which ultimately made O ' Brien one of the richest men in Ireland.

Prince owns several copies of On the Road by Jack Kerouac, including one inscribed to Kerouac's mother, one famously read on The Steve Allen Show, the original proof copy of the book and an original galley, as well as the copy owned by Neal Cassady ( the Dean Moriarty character in the book ), with Cassady ’ s signature and marginal notes.

In Kim Newman's The Hound of the D ' Urbervilles, a collection of short stories featuring meetings between characters from the Sherlock Holmes stories and their literary contemporaries, one chapter revolves around a struggle for supremacy between Doctor Mabuse and Professor Moriarty.

In 1980 Coach Ted Hern brought the single-wing to Moriarty High School, the " Fighting " Pintos made three state championship appearances winning 2 state titles, one undefeated season and suffering only 3 losses in four seasons.

In a 1990 concert review, New York Times reviewer Stephen Holden called Moriarty " a jazz pianist of considerable skill, an oddball singer with more than one vocal personality, and a writer of eccentric, jivey jazz songs ".

In one episode, for example, Eccles reported that he never appeared in a scene with Moriarty because both characters were played by the same actor.

Dean Moriarty is one of the protagonists in Jack Kerouac's novel On the Road.

Moran was renowned as one of the best marksmen in the British army, but following a dishonourable discharge he became a mercenary in the employ of Professor Moriarty, on whose orders Moran undertakes several assassinations throughout the film.

Moriarty was previously married to Canadian writer Colin McAdam, and they have one young son, Charlie.

* A version of the character also appeared in the anime series Sherlock Hound, Moriarty being the villain behind every crime in the series.

Moriarty is the criminal genius behind a highly organized and extremely secret criminal force and Holmes will consider it the crowning achievement of his career if only he can defeat Moriarty.

Just when Watson and " Holmes " discover that Professor Moriarty ( Paul Freeman ) is the mastermind behind the scheme, Watson is apparently killed in an attempt to capture Moriarty, forcing " Holmes " to solve the case on his own.

On Memorial Day in 1932, Moriarty worked behind the plate for a Cleveland Indians home game against the White Sox ; when several Chicago players took exception to his calls, he challenged them to settle the dispute under the stands of League Park after the game.
