SU is a member of the Big East Conference for all NCAA Division I athletics, except for women's ice hockey, and the rowing team.

In 2009, MSG hosted the second longest NCAA men's basketball game when the Syracuse Orange and Connecticut Huskies went into six overtimes in the Big East Men's Basketball Tournament.

Eight of the seventeen conference schools are football members and the Big East competes as a BCS conference in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision ( FBS ), the top level of NCAA competition in that sport ( also known by its former designation: Division I-A ).

On March 14, 2009, the Binghamton Bearcats men's basketball team won the America East championship, securing its first bid in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.

The Retrievers participate in NCAA Division 1 as a part of the America East Conference, fielding 17 varsity sports ; eight men and nine women.

The stadium has hosted the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament several times, including the 2008 South Regional Finals, the 2010 South Regional Finals, and the 2011 Final Four.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association ( NCAA ) Men's ice hockey Frozen Four West Regional was hosted on March 24 and March 25, 2007.

As a junior on the University of Kentucky basketball team in 1966 he was named First Team All-SEC, All-NCAA Tournament Team, NCAA Regional Player of the Year, SEC Player of the Year & AP Third Team All-American, leading the Wildcats to the NCAA title game.

Furman hosted the NCAA Southeast Regional Cross Country championships for over a decade, and hosted the NCAA Cross Country championship in 1998.

The Dome has hosted an NCAA Men's Basketball Regional three times and is scheduled to host in 2012.
