National Maritime Day proclamation by John A. Notte, Jr., Governor

The President of the United States, pursuant to a Joint Resolution of Congress, has issued a proclamation each year since 1933 declaring May 22nd to be National Maritime Day.

and now, therefore, do I, John A. Notte, Jr., Governor of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, proclaim Monday, May 22nd, 1961, as National Maritime Day, reminding our citizens that American Merchant ships and American seamen are ready at all times to serve our Nation in the cause of freedom and justice.

The President of the United States proclaimed the first Sunday in November as `` National Grandmothers' Day '' and urged America to say it with flowers.

In July there is a National Day of Commemoration for Irish men and women who died in past wars, such as the Irish War of Independence and on service with the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces.

The 1990s marked a significant shift in attitudes towards commemorating the Famine, as hundreds of events took place in Ireland and throughout the Irish diaspora, some of which received sponsorship from the National Famine Commemoration Committee based in the Department of the Taoiseach, led by TD Avril Doyle.

In 2010 Britain failed to send a diplomatic representative to the opening of the National Famine Commemoration, while 14 other nations did.

The state has its own National Day of Commemoration ( held in July ) for all Irish men and women who have died in war.

Every year on the National Day of Commemoration – the Sunday nearest July 11-the anniversary of the Truce that ended the Anglo-Irish War – the President of Ireland, in the presence of members of the Government of Ireland, members of Dáil Éireann and of Seanad Éireann, the Council of State, the Defence Forces, the Judiciary and the Diplomatic Corps, lays a wreath in the courtyard in memory of all Irishmen and Irishwomen who have died in past wars and on service with the United Nations.

The National Famine Commemoration Committee has agreed that the centerpiece of the new memorial day should rotate between the Four Provinces on an annual basis.

In Ireland, the National Day of Commemoration () commemorates all Irish people who died in past wars or United Nations peacekeeping missions.

The preceding 1916 Easter Rising against British rule in Ireland was the focus, with Easter Day considered the " National Day of Commemoration ".

July 11, the anniversary of the 1921 truce, had already been a special Army holiday before being the base date for the National Day of Commemoration.

An informal Oireachtas all-party committee was established in late 1984 to examine the question of a single National Day of Commemoration.

The first National Day of Commemoration was held on 13 July 1986 in the Garden of Remembrance.

One of the main recommendations made by the All-Party Oireachtas Committee was that the National Day of Commemoration should be organised in a way which would reflect its national importance, which would encourage people of different traditions to participate and which would attract the interest and support of the public.

The National Day of Commemoration is, along with Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, and Saint Patrick's Day, one of the days on which the Department of the Taoiseach's protocol section has advised all government buildings to fly the national flag.

* National Famine Commemoration Day

In addition to coordinating the National Civic Commemoration, ceremonies and educational programs during the week of the DRVH are regularly held throughout the country, sponsored by Governors, Mayors, veterans groups, religious groups, and military ships and stations throughout the world.

On 20 March 2001 Sinn Féin's national chairperson Mitchel McLaughlin opened the National Hunger Strike Commemoration Committee's exhibition at the Europa Hotel in Belfast, which included three original works of art from Belfast-based artists.
