Both the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, in St. Louis, and the 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, in Portland, Oregon, showcased Lewis and Clark as American pioneers.

The Oregon Territorial Legislature voted to rename it Linn City on December 22, 1845 as a memorial to Senator Lewis F. Linn after whom Linn County is also named.

McArthur, said that although the origin of this name is disputed, he puts great weight in Levi Ankeny who supplied this information as he was " thoroughly familiar with the early history and tradition of the Wallowa Valley " and " on intimate terms with many Indians who knew the facts of the matter ".

Just downstream from the handsome prairie where Lewis & Clark and David Thompson camped there was a natural boat landing that later became known as Parker's Landing and played an important role for settlers following the Oregon Trail.

Long after the Lewis & Clark Expedition and also after the consolidation of the fur trade in the region by the Canadian fur companies, American " Mountain Men " such as Jedediah Smith and Jim Beckwourth came roaming into and across the Rocky Mountains, following Indian trails through the Rockies to California and Oregon.

In 1959 the Oregon Centennial Exposition was primarily sited at the former site of Vanport.

The park, conceived as an attraction timed to accompany the 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, was built by the Oregon Water Power and Railway Company and opened on May 30, 1905, during a period when trolley parks were often constructed along streetcar lines.

The Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, commonly also known as the Lewis and Clark Exposition, and officially known as the Lewis and Clark Centennial American Pacific Exposition and Oriental Fair, was a worldwide exposition held in Portland, Oregon, United States in 1905 to celebrate the centennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

He, too, spoke highly of the government ’ s involvement, and wrote that “ The State of Oregon gave more solid help … to the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, than any other state of the Union has ever given to an exposition held within its borders .” He was also specifically grateful for the City of Portland ’ s assistance, and noted that their “ cordial and enthusiastic backing ” was invaluable to the success of the Fair.

By September 4, 1902, the Oregon Journal reported that “ the fair officials are hot on the trail of a site and it is confidently predicted that ‘ something will be doing ’ shortly .” The next day, they reported that the committee had narrowed its choices to “ two tracts … Willamette heights on the west side and Hawthorne Park, with a portion of the Ladd tract, on the east side ,” and that Willamette Heights was to be chosen, as “ It is claimed that the natural advantages offered by the Willamette Heights outweigh all other considerations and that … Guild ’ s Lake, it is said, can be utilized to great advantage and made a scene of beauty ….” With this voting, “ the Lewis and Clark Exposition had its site – a grove of trees, of pasture, and of waist-high stagnant water at the site ’ s center .”

States to have exhibits at the Exposition were: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Oklahoma, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
