In 1996, The Samples signed with MCA Records and released " Outpost ", their 5th studio album.

After the band signed with Outpost, they began working on their debut album.

The album was released through Outpost / Geffen on February 11, 1997.

The album, now titled Tonight and the Rest of My Life, was finished in early 1999 and was set to be released by Outpost Records, owned by Geffen Records, in August 1999.

Despite the album's completion and Whiskeytown's sizable fanbase, Outpost Records closed during the merger between Polygram and Universal, and as a result the album stayed in limbo for nearly two years, effectively ending the band.

Their self-titled debut, and only official, album was released in May 1998 on Geffen Records subsidiary Outpost Recordings.
