The PGA conducts a number of major events including the PGA Championship, Senior PGA Championship, PGA Grand Slam of Golf, and the biennial Ryder Cup.

The term also refers to a tour tournament, the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, an annual off season tournament contested by the winners of the four major championships.

The modern definition could not be applied until at least 1934, when the Masters was founded, and still carried little weight in 1953 when Ben Hogan, after winning the Masters, the U. S. Open and The Open Championship, could not compete in the PGA Championship ; the nearly concurrent PGA Championship and The Open Championship and the state of transatlantic travel made completing the Grand Slam impossible.

According to Arnold Palmer's autobiography, " A Golfer's Life ," in 1960 he ( already having won the Masters and the U. S. Open that year ) and his friend Bob Drum ( of the Pittsburgh Press ) on the trans-Atlantic flight to The Open Championship at St Andrews came up with the idea that adding the The Open Championship and PGA Championship titles that summer would constitute a modern Grand Slam.

Tiger Woods has come closest to meeting the modern definition of golf's Grand Slam by holding all four modern major championships simultaneously — the U. S. Open, The Open Championship and the PGA Championship in 2000 and the 2001 Masters — although not in the same calendar year.

Nicklaus did not win the Grand Slam in 1972, however, as Lee Trevino repeated as the Open Championship winner ( Nicklaus finished second, one shot behind ), and Gary Player prevailed in the PGA Championship.

This victory was to be his last in his long career on the PGA Tour, and was described at the time by noted golf historian and writer Herbert Warren Wind as " nothing less than the most important accomplishment in golf since Bobby Jones ' Grand Slam in 1930 ".

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf is an annual off-season golf tournament contested by the year's winners of the four major championships of regular men's golf, which are the Masters Tournament, the U. S. Open, The Open Championship ( British Open ), and the PGA Championship.

Initially the PGA Grand Slam of Golf was played at a different golf course each year, but from 1994 to 2006, it was played at the Poipu Bay Golf Course in Koloa, Hawaii on the island of Kauai.

Ben Hogan wins the first three legs of the modern Grand Slam ( The Masters, U. S. Open, and British Open ), but does not compete in the final leg, the PGA Championship.

In 1986, Norman won two regular PGA Tour events ; the Panasonic Las Vegas Invitational and the Kemper Open ( for the second time ), but 1986 is remembered for the Norman Slam or the Saturday Slam.

This is the most common method used in golf clubs and is the only method allowed in the PGA ( Professional Golf Association ) and LPGA ( Ladies Professional Golf Association ).

" He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974, and received the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998.

In 1978, he won the first Legends of Golf event, which was the impetus for the creation two years later of the Senior PGA Tour, now Champions Tour.

According to Golf Digest, Palmer made $ 1, 861, 857 in 734 PGA Tour career starts over 53 years ; he earned an estimated $ 30 million off the course in 2008.

James Harnett, a journalist with Golf Illustrated magazine, appears to have proposed a similar idea to the PGA of America on December 15, 1920 and, having failed to attract support, the idea was refloated by Sylvanus P. " SP " Jermain, president of the Inverness Club, the next year.

Currently the tribe operates two casinos, one full-service hotel, and the Mojave Resort PGA Championship Golf Course.

Memphis hosts NBA Basketball, PGA Golf Tournaments, AAA Pro Baseball, major college Basketball, the Liberty Bowl and other major sporting events that are all easily accessible in a short drive.
