Buckley later took up residence in a cave near Point Lonsdale on the western side of the bay's entrance, The Rip.

The narrow entrance to the bay, called the Rip, between Point Lonsdale and Point Nepean, features strong tidal streams made turbulent by the uneven contours of the seabed.

The first European settler in the area was convict escapee William Buckley between 1803 and 1835, latterly in a cave beneath the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse, with the local Aborigines.

As it is located on a peninsula, the Bellarine Highway is the only road connecting it to Point Lonsdale and Geelong running west.

Geographically, it is the roughly triangular area of water between the land points of Point Nepean, Shortlands Bluff and Point Lonsdale, these 3 form The Heads.

The rip is generally considered to be located in the triangular area of water between the land points of Point Nepean, Shortlands Bluff and Point Lonsdale.

The entrance between Point Lonsdale and Point Nepean is 3. 5 km wide but the reefs projecting from these points reduce the navigable width to about 1 km.

Control of shipping movements through the heads is managed by the Point Lonsdale Signal Station.

Examples include The Rip between Point Nepean and Point Lonsdale at the entrance to Port Philip Bay, Victoria, Australia ; the Menai Strait between Anglesey and Wales ; or the Strait of Gibraltar at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea.

Following a collaboration with the Victorian Methodists, an initial camp was set up near Point Lonsdale.

; Spiral Jetty: The northwest arm of the lake, near Rozel Point, is the location for Robert Smithson's work of land art, Spiral Jetty ( 1970 ), which is only visible when the level of Great Salt Lake drops below 4, 197. 8 feet ( 1, 280. 2 m ) above sea level.

There is one free camping site in the National Park at Fairhaven, 4 km up the coast road from Tankerton Jetty, where the ferry arrives from Stony Point.

The Wyong River, Ourimbah Creek and Tumbi Creek empty into the southern half of Tuggerah Lake and because of this after heavy rains in June 2007 the lake flooded affecting areas of Long Jetty, Killarney Vale and Chittaway Point.
