Commonly called the Muscat Port, Port Sultan Qaboos is one of the main commercial ports in Oman.

Port Sultan Qaboos ' location makes it an ideal hub, not only for the Persian Gulf but also the Indian sub-continent and markets in East and South Africa.

The location of Port Sultan Qaboos offers considerable savings in steaming time when compared to other ports.

This was all to change with the accession of HM Sultan Qaboos bin Said who inaugurated a new era of maritime commerce and prosperity in Oman when he established Mina Qaboos ( now Port Sultan Qaboos ) in 1974.

Port Sultan Qaboos has been operated and managed by Port Services Corporation S. A. O. G.

Port Fuad was established in 1926, principally to relieve overcrowding in Port Said, and was named after King Fuad I ( also transliterated as Fuad ), the first holder of the title King of Egypt in the modern era ( having previously held the title Sultan of Egypt ).

In an effort to curb the Dhofar insurgency, Sultan Qaboos expanded and re-equipped the armed forces and granted amnesty to all surrendering rebels while vigorously prosecuting the war in Dhofar.

Since his accession in 1970, Sultan Qaboos has balanced tribal, regional, and ethnic interests in composing the national administration.

In November 1996, Sultan Qaboos presented his people with the " Basic Statutes of the State ", Oman's first written " constitution ".

Perhaps most importantly, the Basic Statutes provide rules for setting Sultan Qaboos ' succession.

In December 2000, Sultan Qaboos appointed the 48-member Majlis Al Dowla, or State Council, including five women, which acts as the upper chamber in Oman's bicameral representative body.

In 1986, Oman's first university, Sultan Qaboos University, opened.

Sultan Qaboos also serves as supreme commander of the armed forces, prime minister, and minister of defense, foreign affairs, and finance.

Current Sultan of Oman, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Sa ’ id Al ‘ Bu Sa ’ id holds an extraordinary amount of power.

In November 1991, Sultan Qaboos replaced the 10-year-old State Consultative Council with the Consultative Assembly ( Majlis al-Shura ) to systematize and broaden public participation in government.

Sultan Qaboos Street

In the Muscat area, this highway is known as Sultan Qaboos Street, and it is the trunk road running through the city.

When Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said assumed power in 1970, Oman had limited contacts with the outside world, including neighbouring Arab states.

Ties with the United Kingdom have remained very close under Sultan Qaboos.

In 1974 and April 1983, Sultan Qaboos of Oman made state visits to the United States.

The Sultan of Oman, Qaboos bin Said al Said, criticized Gamal Abdel Nasser and his pan-Arab ideology in private discussions with American officials, which were released by Wikileaks, claiming Nasser deliberately used inflammatory speeches and rhetoric to make his people stupid, and accused Nasser of having " set the region back " and holding a position of " anti-everything.
