It was supported by the city of Porto Alegre ( where it took place ) and the Brazilian Worker's Party.

The WSF became a periodic meeting: in 2002 and 2003 it was held again in Porto Alegre and became a rallying point for worldwide protest against the American invasion of Iraq.

From 1946 through 1985, the army was divided into four numbered armies: the First Army was centered in Rio de Janeiro, the Second Army in São Paulo, the Third Army in Porto Alegre, and the Fourth Army in Recife.

Each of the seven military commands has its headquarters in a major city: Eastern Military Command ( Comando Militar do Leste-CML ), Rio de Janeiro ; Southeastern Military Command ( Comando Militar do Sudeste-CMSE ), São Paulo ; Southern Military Command ( Comando Militar do Sul-CMS ), Porto Alegre ; Northeastern Military Command ( Comando Militar do Nordeste-CMN ), Recife ; CMO, Campo Grande ; CMP, Brasília ; and CMA, Manaus.

The 1st Naval District is located at the country's main naval base in Rio de Janeiro ; the 2nd Naval District is in Salvador ; the 3rd Naval District is located in Natal ; the 4th Naval District is located in Belém ; and the 5th Naval District is located in Porto Alegre.

* 1835 – Ragamuffin rebels capture Porto Alegre, then capital of the Brazilian imperial province of Rio Grande do Sul, triggering the start of ten-year-long Farroupilha Revolution.

( which circulates in cities such as Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo ), most publications from Grupo RBS ( especially the Porto Alegre daily Zero Hora ), and, in March 2009, Rio de Janeiro-based O Dia switched to tabloid from broadsheet.

Among them is Instituto Liberdade, a University-based Center at Tecnopuc inside the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, located in the South Region of the country, at the city of Porto Alegre.

Several Roman Catholic Marian churches around the world have also been named after the rosary, e. g. Our Lady of the Rosary Basilica, in Rosario Argentina, the Rosary Basilica in Lourdes and Nossa Senhora do Rosário in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

The fifth World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in January 2005 was attended by representatives from more than 1, 000 NGOs.

An assembly last met in Porto Alegre, Brazil in February 2006, under the theme " God, in your grace, transform the world ".

Southern Brazilian parades take place in Curitiba, Florianópolis, Porto Alegre and Pelotas, and Center-Western ones happen in Campo Grande, Cuiabá, Goiânia and Brasília.

2 ) The World Social Forum at Porto Alegre was an event localised in time and place.

From now on, in the certainty proclaimed at Porto Alegre that " Another World Is Possible ", it becomes a permanent process of seeking and building alternatives, which cannot be reduced to the events supporting it.

The first World Social Forum was held from 25 January to 30 January 2001 in Porto Alegre, Brazil, organized by many groups including the French Association for the Taxation of Financial Transactions for the Aid of Citizens ( ATTAC ).

The WSF was sponsored, in part, by the Porto Alegre government, led by the Brazilian Worker's Party ( PT ).

The second WSF, also held in Porto Alegre from 31 January to 5 February 2002, had over 12, 000 official delegates representing people from 123 countries, 60, 000 attendees, 652 workshops, and 27 talks.

The third WSF was again held in Porto Alegre, in January 2003.

The fifth World Social Forum 2005 was held in Porto Alegre, Brazil between 26 January and 31 January.

The island is divided into eight municipalities, of which Portoferraio is the main one, the others ; Campo nell ' Elba, Capoliveri, Marciana, Marciana Marina, Porto Azzurro, Rio Marina, and Rio nell ' Elba, are part of the province of Livorno, with a total of about 30, 000 inhabitants, which increases considerably during the summer.

The Douro railway line ( in Portuguese: Linha do Douro ) was completed in 1887 ; it connects Porto, Rio Tinto, Ermesinde, Valongo, Paredes, Penafiel, Livração, Marco de Canaveses, Régua, Tua and Pocinho.

In the 2000s, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre have gained several vegetarian and vegan restaurants.

Porto Alegre ( ; Merry Harbour ) is the capital and largest city in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Unlike other large Brazilian cities much farther north, notably Brasilia, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro who observe a pronounced summer maximum in precipitation amounts, the city of Porto Alegre experiences a prominent winter maximum in precipitation values and cloud cover, for the summer season is primarily hot and dry ; though evidently high humidity levels often give a distinct mugginess to the air and negatively impacts air quality.

A partnership between SMAM, the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, the State Environmental Protection Foundation ( FEPAM ) and Petrobrás has created a network of five air monitoring stations in Porto Alegre.

After some decades, many of them started to migrate to other parts of Rio Grande do Sul, including Porto Alegre. Minority communities of immigrants, such as Central Europeans from Poland and Eastern Europeans from Ukraine ; Arabs from Palestine, Lebanon and Syria ; Asians from Japan and Jews also made Porto Alegre their home.

Sport Club Internacional () is a Brazilian football team and multi-sport club from Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, founded on April 4, 1909.

The second leg ended in a 18 – 19 tie in Porto Alegre, at Beira Rio Stadium.

Since 1990, the Workers ' Party has grown in popularity on the national stage by winning the elections in many of the largest Brazilian cities, such as São Paulo, Fortaleza, Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre, and Goiânia, as well as in some important states, such as Rio Grande do Sul, Espírito Santo, and the Federal District.

By the early 20th century, the state had two railway systems: the Paranaguá to Curitiba ( 69 miles ) ( 111 km ) with an extension to Ponta Grossa ( 118 miles ) ( 190 km ) and branches to Rio Negro ( 55 miles ) ( 89 km ), Porto Amazonas ( 6 miles ) ( 10 km ) and Antonina ( 10 miles ) ( 16 km ); and the São Paulo and Rio Grande, which crosses the state from northeast to south-west from União da Vitória, on the Iguaçu, to a junction with the Sorocabana line of São Paulo at Itararé.

Mindelo's deep-water port, Porto Grande, is connected to Mindelo Bay, an underwater volcanic crater, and is used for cruise ships and other commercial traffic.

It was only in 1838, when a coal deposit was established in Porto Grande to supply ships on Atlantic routes, that the population started to grow rapidly.

On that occasion, under consent of the Brazilian military regime, high officers of the Uruguayan army secretly crossed the frontier, heading to Porto Alegre, capital of the State of Rio Grande do Sul.

The towns founded in this period include Curitiba ( 1668 ), Florianópolis ( 1675 ), Rio Grande ( 1736 ), Porto Alegre ( 1742 ) and others, and helped keep Southern Brazil firmly under Portuguese control.

Other medium sized family companies specialized in textiles ( for instance those located in the city of Covilhã and the northwest ), ceramics, porcelain, glass and crystal ( like those of Alcobaça, Caldas da Raínha and Marinha Grande ), engineered wood ( like SONAE near Porto ), canned fish ( like those of Algarve and the northwest ), fishing, food and beverages ( alcoholic beverages, from liqueurs like Licor Beirão and Ginjinha, to beer like Sagres, were produced across the entire country, but Port Wine was one of its most reputed and exported alcoholic beverages ), tourism ( well established in Estoril / Cascais / Sintra and growing as an international attraction in the Algarve since the 1960s ) and in agriculture ( like the ones scattered around the Alentejo-known as the breadbasket of Portugal ) completed the panorama of the national economy by the early 1970s.

As the main city in this community, the area of influence of Leiria spreads over the cities of Marinha Grande, Ourém, Alcobaça, Fátima, Pombal as well the municipalities / town seats of Batalha, Porto de Mós and Nazaré located nearby.

There are four motorways passing the city ; the A1-Auto-estrada do Norte linking Porto to Lisbon, passing by Coimbra and Leiria, the A8 ( Lisbon-Leiria ) the A17 ( Marinha Grande – Aveiro ) and the A19.
