Proscenium theatres have fallen out of favor in some theatre circles because they perpetuate the fourth wall concept.

Theatre-in-the-round was common in ancient theatre, particularly that of Greece and Rome but was not widely explored again until the latter half of the 20th century ; it has continued as a creative alternative to the more common Proscenium format.

This is often problematic for Proscenium or end stage trained actors who are taught that they must never turn their backs to the audience ; something that is unavoidable in this format.

Proscenium stages, or picture-box stages, were constructed in France around the time of the English Restoration, and maintain the place of the most popular form of stage in use to-date, and originally combined elements of the skene in design, essentially building a skene on-stage.
