However, there are only a few kampung villages remaining, mostly on islands surrounding Singapore such as Pulau Ubin.

Pulau Tekong is found off Singapore's northeastern coast, east of Pulau Ubin.

The early name could have arisen because the island served as a trading station for both residents of Pulau Ubin and the state of Johor.

The female tigers were said to swim from Johore to Pulau Ubin to rest, before completing their journey to Singapore.

Pulau Ubin is a small island ( 10. 19 km² ) situated in the north east of Singapore, to the west of Pulau Tekong.

Granite quarrying supported a few thousand settlers on Pulau Ubin in the 1960s, but only about a hundred villagers live there today.

The name Pulau Ubin literally means " Granite Island " in Malay, which explains the many abandoned granite quarries there.

To the Malays, the island is also known as Pulau Batu Ubin, or " Granite Stone Island ".

Legend has it that Pulau Ubin was formed when three animals from Singapore ( a frog, a pig and an elephant ) challenged each other to a race to reach the shores of Johor.

Therefore, the elephant and pig together turned into Pulau Ubin whilst the frog became Pulau Sekudu or Frog Island.

Pulau Ubin first appeared on map in an 1828 sketch of the Island of Singapore as Pulo Obin and in Franklin and Jackson's map as Po.

Many of the former kampongs on Pulau Ubin were either named after the first person who settled in the kampong or by some feature in the area.

Pulau Ubin was found to be suitable for the construction of several campsites.

Outward Bound Singapore ( OBS ) was established in 1967 at Pulau Ubin, by Dr Goh Keng Swee, while the National Police Cadet Corps ( NPCC ) opened its 30-hectare site located between Kamupung Bahru and Kampung Noordin.

Pulau Ubin is one of the few areas in Singapore that is largely free from urban development.

Pulau Ubin is one of the last areas in Singapore that has been preserved from urban development, concrete buildings and tarmac roads.

Krakatoa ( or rather, the three minor islets which remain of it ) was declared as a Nature Reserve in 1921, followed by Pulau Panaitan and Pulau Peucang Nature Reserve in 1937, the Ujung Kulon Nature Reserve in 1958, the Gunung Honje Nature Reserve in 1967, and most recently Ujung Kulon National Park in 1992.

The PSA also carried out the removal of reef, dredging, and widening of Selat Sengkir ( the channel between Pulau Brani and Sentosa ) in February 1973.

One of the oldest residents continued to live on the Pulau Sakeng despite his family having been resettled but he eventually moved out as well in 1991, as the island's jetty fell into a sorry state of disrepair.

Birds can be seen in the air and on the open landscape, fishes swim in and out of the lagoons, and marine life continues to thrive in the mangrove mudflats and the western shorelines of Pulau Semakau.

The coral reefs around Pulau Semakau have been monitored since the late 1980s to 2001, by the National University of Singapore, and from 2005 to the present by the " Reef Friends " programme ( a joint project between the National Biodiversity Centre, National Parks Board and Blue Water Volunteers ).

The airport also serves limited scheduled commercial flights by Berjaya Air to the Malaysian islands of Pulau Tioman and Pulau Redang

The-long park has pleasant walkways bordered by shrubs and the mangrove fringed Pulau Ranggu where two species of monkeys live, including the notable Proboscis Monkey only found in Borneo.

It was apparently named as such by the mainly Bajau locals to commemorate the burning of the British administrative office on Pulau Gaya ( Gaya Island ) instigated by Mat Salleh, as well as other incidents of arson normally perpetrated by pirates.

It is a name purportedly given by fishermen from Pulau Gaya referring to the strip of land which today is downtown Kota Kinabalu.

Another way of getting there is by chartering a speed boat from Kota Kinabalu and cruise to Pulau Tiga, or fly to Labuan and charter a speed boat from Labuan.

The islands / islets are Batu Berlayar Island which full of granite, Pasir Island which is made of sand (= pasir in Indonesian language ) and submerged during high tide, Bird Islet ( Pulau Burong ) which can be accessed from Tanjung Binga Beach by walking when low tide, Lengkuas Island which is a home of 129-year-old lighthouse and a good place for snorkeling, Babi Island and Kelayang Islet.

In early 1978, a staunch anti-Communist, he escaped from the Communist regime of Vietnam by boat and sailed with 87 compatriots to Pulau Besar in Malaysia.
