In the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, a Canadian steamship, the RMS Empress of Australia and her captain, Samuel Robinson achieved international acclaim for stalwart rescue efforts during the immediate aftermath of that disaster.

In September 1970, he bought the famous ocean liner RMS Queen Elizabeth to convert it into a floating university S. S. Seawise University to keep the World Campus Afloat program alive.

The RMS Queen Mary | Queen Mary ( 1936 ) is one of the last surviving ocean liners.

Other than the RMS Queen Mary 2, remaining modern ocean liners are: The United States, currently laid up in Philadelphia, the Queen Elizabeth 2, which is to be converted into a floating hotel in Dubai, the Rotterdam now moored in Rotterdam as a museum / hotel., the Veronica, ( former S. S Kungsholm ) which was converted into a floating hotel in Duqm Oman, and the MS Marco Polo ( former MS Alexandr Pushkin ) which is currently used for cruising.
