Alfred Ploetz ( August 22, 1860 – March 20, 1940 ) was a German physician, biologist, eugenicist known for coining the term racial hygiene ( Rassenhygiene ) and promoting the concept in Germany.

In 1935 Verschuer continued to work at the KWI-A but shifted his primary attention to the Frankfurt Institute for Genetic Biology and Racial Hygiene (' Institut für Erbbiologie und Rassenhygiene '), leading the sterilization effort in the city of Frankfurt.

The German eugenicist Alfred Ploetz introduced the term Rassenhygiene in his " Racial hygiene basics " ( Grundlinien einer Rassenhygiene ) in 1895.

He was the director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Anthropology, Human Heredity, and Eugenics ( Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut für Anthropologie, menschliche Erblehre, und Eugenik ; KWIfA ) in Berlin and the Institute for Genetic Biology and Racial Hygiene ( Institut für Erbbiologie und Rassenhygiene ).

Ploetz first proposed the theory of racial hygiene ( race-based eugenics ) in his " Racial Hygiene Basics " ( Grundlinien einer Rassenhygiene ) in 1895.

Rassenhygiene is a form of eugenics.

In 1904 Ploetz founded the periodical " Archiv für Rassen-und Gesellschaftsbiologie " with Fritz Lenz as chief editor, and in 1905 the " Deutsche Gesellschaft für Rassenhygiene " ( German association of eugenics ).

The earliest use of the term " supergene " may be in an article by A. Ernst ( 1936 ) in the journal Archiv der Julzus Klaus-stiftung fur Vererbungsforschung, Sozialanthropologie und Rassenhygiene.
