The 1920s also spawned a new age of American playwright with the emergence of Eugene O ' Neill, whose plays Beyond the Horizon, Anna Christie, The Hairy Ape, Strange Interlude and Mourning Becomes Electra proved that there was an audience for serious drama on Broadway, and O ' Neill's success paved the way for major dramatists like Elmer Rice, Maxwell Anderson, Robert E. Sherwood, Tennessee Williams, and Arthur Miller, as well as writers of comedy like George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart.

According to a contemporary account in the Eugene ( Ore .) Register-Guard, when Renfro left the game, he was given a loud and appreciative ovation by the Rice crowd.

The " Average Man " comedies starred Kennedy as a blustery, stubborn guy determined to accomplish a household project or get ahead professionally, despite the meddling of his featherbrained wife ( usually Florence Lake ), her freeloading brother ( originally William Eugene, then Jack Rice ) and his dubious mother-in-law ( Dot Farley ).

A subsequent investigation led by the District Attorney of New York resulted in the arrests of Patrick and of Rice's butler and valet Charles F. Jones, who had been persuaded to administer chloroform to Rice while he slept.

Rice ) denotes using a subset of the family of Golomb codes to produce a simpler ( but possibly suboptimal ) prefix code ; Rice used this in an adaptive coding scheme, although " Rice coding " can refer to either that scheme or merely using that subset of Golomb codes.

Edgar Rice Burroughs ' A Princess of Mars ( 1912 ) is also sometimes seen as a major work of scientific romance, and Sam Moskowitz referred to him in 1958 as " the acknowledged master of the scientific romance ," though the scholar E. F. Bleiler views Burroughs as part of the " new development " of pulp science fiction that arose in the early 20th century.

Morton's Fork is cited by the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in Burroughs v. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Inc., 683 F. 2d 610 ( 1982 ), where heirs of Tarzan author Edgar Rice Burroughs and Burroughs's rights-holding corporation Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., claimed copyright infringement in MGM's 1981 film Tarzan, the Ape Man.
