Writer George Bernard Shaw claimed to have read the complete 9th edition — except for the science articles — and Richard Evelyn Byrd took the Britannica as reading material for his five-month stay at the South Pole in 1934, while Philip Beaver read it during a sailing expedition.

The three previous claims to have arrived at the North Pole — by Frederick Cook in 1908 ; Robert Peary in 1909 ; and Richard Evelyn Byrd in 1926 ( just a few days before the Norge )— are all disputed, as being either of dubious accuracy or outright fraud.

Shakespeare ( in Richard II ) was familiar with the species in the 1590s, as was Evelyn in the early 1660s ( Sylva ), both around the time when Scots Pine was thought to become extinct in England, but when landowners were also beginning ornamental and forestry planting.

Their house, Sayes Court ( adjacent to the naval dockyard ), was purchased by Evelyn from his father-in-law Sir Richard Browne in 1653 and Evelyn soon began to transform the gardens.

John and Mary Evelyn had eight children: Richard ( 1652 – 1658 ), John Standsfield ( 1653 – 1654 ), John ( the younger ) ( 1655 – 1699 ), George ( 1657 – 1658 ), Richard ii ( 1664 ), Mary ( 1665 – 1685 ), Elizabeth ( 1667 – 1685 ) and Susanna ( 1669 – 1754 ).

Rear Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd, Jr., USN ( 25 October 1888 – 11 March 1957 ) was a naval officer who specialized in feats of exploration.

He was the son of Esther Bolling ( Flood ) and Richard Evelyn Byrd, Sr.

Later that same year, Byng met at a local party Marie Evelyn Moreton, the only daughter of Sir Richard Charles Moreton, who had himself served as comproller at the Canadian royal and viceroyal residence of Rideau Hall, under the then Governor General of Canada the Marquess of Lorne.

Under Fosdick the first executive officer of the CTCA was Richard Byrd, whose name in later years was to become synonymous with activities at the polar antipodes.

A widely related story, attributed to Richard ( Prophet ) Jennings was that Davis, while in Detroit playing at the Blue Bird club as a guest soloist in Billy Mitchell's house band along with Tommy Flanagan, Elvin Jones, Betty Carter, Yusef Lateef, Barry Harris, Thad Jones, Curtis Fuller and Donald Byrd stumbled into Baker's Keyboard Lounge out of the rain, soaking wet and carrying his trumpet in a paper bag under his coat, walked to the bandstand and interrupted Max Roach and Clifford Brown in the midst of performing Sweet Georgia Brown by beginning to play My Funny Valentine, and then, after finishing the song, stumbled back into the rainy night.

The first claimed flight over the Pole was made on 9 May 1926 by US naval officer Richard E. Byrd and pilot Floyd Bennett in a Fokker tri-motor aircraft.

As the breed was beginning to come to prominence, in 1933 Navy Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd brought about 50 Siberian Huskies with him on an expedition in which he hoped to journey around the 16, 000-mile coast of Antarctica.

According to Harley, Thomas Byrd, the grandson of Richard Byrd of Ingatestone, Essex, likely moved to London in the 15th century.

In 1928, Eagle Scout ( and Erie native ) Paul Siple was one of the first Scouts to travel to Antarctica with Admiral Richard Byrd.

The Chinook Kennels here raised sled dogs for the Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd Antarctic expeditions and the Army's search-and-rescue units.

In 1872, Henry H. Townsend established The Miltonia Mills, which manufactured fine wool blankets used by Admiral Robert E. Peary on his expedition to the North Pole, and Admiral Richard E. Byrd at the Antarctic.

The town, where several families already lived, was named for Colonel Richard Byrd, a Civil War veteran from Kingston.

The community got its name from the Little America motel which was purposefully located in a remote location as a haven, not unlike the base camp the polar explorer Richard E. Byrd set up in the Antarctic in 1928.

Richard Byrd and Floyd Bennett were awarded the medal after World War I for the exploration of the North Pole.
