Robert Falcon Scott, CVO ( 6 June 1868 – 29 March 1912 ) was a Royal Navy officer and explorer who led two expeditions to the Antarctic regions: the Discovery Expedition, 1901 – 04, and the ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition, 1910 – 13.

Three years later, while Robert was serving with the Channel squadron flagship, John Scott died of heart disease, creating a fresh family crisis.

James Ferrier Pryde was born in Edinburgh on March 30, 1866, the son of David Pryde, Headmaster of Edinburgh Ladies College 1870-1891, and Barbara Lauder, whose father William was a brother of the famous Scottish artists Robert Scott Lauder and James Eckford Lauder.

The last of the ancient proprietors, Robert Lauder of that Ilk ( d. c1655 ), bequeathed the tower house and other lands to his daughter Isobel, who had married Alexander Home of St. Leonards, in Lauderdale, both dead by November 1683, the major part of the inheritance sold.
