The ballad Adam Bell, Clym of the Cloughe and Wyllyam of Cloudeslee runs parallel to Robin Hood and the Monk, but it is not clear whether either one is the source for the other, or whether they merely show that such tales were told of outlaws.

The earliest surviving text of a Robin Hood ballad is " Robin Hood and the Monk ".

The plots of neither " the Monk " nor " the Potter " are included in the Gest ; and neither is the plot of " Robin Hood and Guy of Gisborne " which is probably at least as old as those two ballads although preserved in a more recent copy.

While the Sheriff of Nottingham and the town itself appear in early ballads, and Sherwood is specifically mentioned in the early ballad Robin Hood and the Monk, certain of the original ballads ( even those with Nottingham references ) locate Robin on occasion in Barnsdale ( the area between Pontefract and Doncaster ), approximately fifty miles north of Nottingham, in the county of Yorkshire ; furthermore, it has been suggested that the ballads placed in this area are far more geographically specific and accurate.

In the 15th-century ballad most commonly called " Robin Hood and the Monk ", after being ill-treated by Robin, Little John leaves in anger.

Ballads from the High Middle Ages published in the Child Ballads such as A Gest of Robyn Hode, Robin Hood and the Monk, Robin Hood and Guy of Gisborne, and Robin Hood and the Potter, as well as Sir Walter Scott's 1820 novel Ivanhoe all point to a possible South Yorkshire birth for the legend.

He appears in some of the oldest ballads, A Gest of Robyn Hode and Robin Hood and the Monk, as one of the company.

In Robin Hood and the Monk, he is one of the rescuers of the captive Robin ; in this brutal ballad, he kills a page boy so that the boy can not bear word that the outlaws killed the monk of the title.

There are notable parallels between this ballad and that of Robin Hood and the Monk, but whether either legend was the source for the other cannot be established.
