Stuart Allen Roosa ( August 16, 1933 – December 12, 1994 ) was a NASA astronaut, who was the command module pilot for the Apollo 14 mission.

Subsequently, Roosa and Mitchell were recycled to serve as members of the backup crew after returning from Apollo 14, while Pogue and Carr were re-assigned to the Skylab program where they later flew on Skylab 4.

Roosa was born in Durango, Colorado, and grew up in Claremore, Oklahoma.

From July 1962 to August 1964, Roosa was a maintenance flight test pilot at Olmsted Air Force Base, Pennsylvania, flying F-101 aircraft.

Throughout his career, Roosa logged more than 5, 500 hours of flying time ( 5, 000 hours in jets ) and 217 hours in space.

Roosa undergoes final space suit check prior to liftoff of Apollo 14.

Roosa was one of 19 people selected as part of the astronaut class of 1966 and served as a member of the astronaut support crew for the Apollo 9 mission.

Following Apollo 14, Roosa served as backup command module pilot for Apollo 16 and Apollo 17, and based on crew rotations, would probably have commanded one of the last Apollo Missions had it not been cancelled.

Roosa earned a PMD from Harvard Business School, Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1973 and an honorary LL. D.

Stuart Roosa died on December 12, 1994 in Washington D. C. due to complications from pancreatitis, aged 61.

In the 1998 miniseries From the Earth to the Moon, Roosa was played by George Newbern.

In 1888, a work camp was established at Cumberland Gap by Scottish-born entrepreneur Alexander Arthur ( 1846 – 1912 ) to house workers needed to build a tunnel for the Knoxville, Cumberland Gap & Louisville Railroad.

After the war, Wilder and Ohio-born Knoxville Iron Company founder Hiram Chamberlain ( 1835 – 1916 ) purchased at what is now Rockwood, selecting the location due to the ore and coal resources at the base of Walden Ridge, the proximity to the Tennessee River, and an assumption that the encroaching railroads would descend the Plateau at nearby Emory Gap.

During the first week of December 2008, Cranfills Gap and local media were notified by LVCVA that the town had won the nationwide search and 100 of its residents would be sent on a free trip to Las Vegas during the weekend of December 5 – 7, 2008.
