SDL National Director Jale Baba announced on 11 September 2005 that the party would contest all 71 parliamentary seats in the 2006 election.

Prime Minister Qarase also announced on 11 September that the SDL would attempt to negotiate preference deals with the National Federation Party ( NFP ) and the Fiji Labour Party ( FLP ) ahead of the 2006 election.
