Lower down the river at Golitha Falls part of the woodland is designated a NNR and is within the Draynes Wood SSSI.

It branches northwards in Crymlyn Burrows and terminates at the Crymlyn Bog nature reserve, now a Site of Special Scientific Interest ( SSSI ).

There is a 1. 3 hectare nature reserve and SSSI at the former quarry at OS ref SK 970108, south of Bloody Oaks on the south side of the road from Empingham to Bloody Oaks.

This internationally important reserve is part of the North Norfolk Coast Site of Special Scientific Interest ( SSSI ) and the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty ( AONB ), and is also protected through Natura 2000, Special Protection Area ( SPA ) and Ramsar listings.

Its course takes it through the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the river between Marlborough and Woolhampton is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest ( SSSI ).

Much of the lower valley is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and part of the SSSI falls within it.
