Initially called the Queensland Sub-Normal Children's Welfare Association, the group received the patronage of Sir Fred Schonell, the first Professor of Education and later Vice-Chancellor of the University of Queensland.

Schonell was Endeavour's first President and extended his research interest in education for people with disabilities by creating the Remedial Education Centre ( now known as the Fred and Eleanor Schonell Special Education Research Centre ), one of the first of its kind in the world.

Before leaving office Soorley started the major infrastructure projects, such as the Eleanor Schonell Bridge ( previously known as the Green Bridge ) from Dutton Park to St Lucia and North-South Bypass Tunnel.

Both form part of the Boggo Road Busway between the South East Busway and UQ via the Eleanor Schonell Bridge.

The Eleanor Schonell Bridge, a dedicated bus / pedestrian / bicycle bridge, connects the University with Dutton Park and carries the 109 bus route from George Street in the city to the Lakes Bus Station on St Lucia campus.

Endeavour's Head Office, one regional office and a non-vocational day service were previously based at the location, now known as Schonell House in Jordan Terrace, which was sold to property developer BMI Group in the late 2000's and has since been onsold.

On 17 December 2006, the Eleanor Schonell Bridge was opened, linking the St Lucia campus of the University of Queensland with southern Brisbane.

With the opening of the Eleanor Schonell Bridge and the Boggo Road Busway which opened on 3 August 2009 the suburb has become a major hub for the Brisbane City Busway as well as the terminating point for the Boggo Road Busway.

The busway runs from the University of Queensland St Lucia Campus via the Eleanor Schonell Bridge, connects with the South East Busway at Buranda busway station and then extends to Coorparoo following the Old Cleveland Road corridor.
