Schwanengesang (" Swan song ") is the title of a posthumous collection of songs by Franz Schubert.

In Schwanengesang, this song stands at the end of the Heine songs, although Heine's order is different and it has been argued that the sequence works better dramatically when the songs are performed in their order of appearance in the Buch der Lieder.

Schubert's Schwanengesang ( 1828 ), though collected posthumously, is also frequently performed as a cycle.

Schubert also set to music a poem named Schwanengesang by Johann Senn, unrelated to this collection ( number D744 in the Deutsch catalogue ).

Der Doppelgänger is one of the six songs from Franz Schubert's Schwanengesang that sets words by Heinrich Heine for piano and tenor voice.

Heine's Buch der Lieder is divided into five sections ; all the poems set in Schwanengesang are from the third, Die Heimkehr (" The homecoming ").

For example, the Penguin Guide to Compact Discs says of Schreier's recording of Franz Schubert's Schwanengesang, " Schreier's voice may no longer be beautiful under pressure, but ... the range of tone and the intensity of inflexion over word-meaning makes this one of the most compelling recordings ever.

In 1974, Led Zeppelin took a break from touring and launched their own record label, Swan Song, named after an unreleased song.

In the song " Power and Glory " from Lou Reed's 1992 album Magic and Loss, Reed recalls the experience of seeing his friend dying of cancer and makes reference to the myth, " I saw isotopes introduced into his lungs / trying to stop the cancerous spread / And it made me think of Leda and The Swan / and gold being made from lead "

Other references in classical literature include the belief that upon death the otherwise silent Mute Swan would sing beautifully-hence the phrase swan song ; as well as Juvenal's sarcastic reference to a good woman being a " rare bird, as rare on earth as a black swan ", from which we get the Latin phrase rara avis, rare bird.

Swan came into the spotlight after EMI Records UK leased The Beatles ' song " She Loves You " and, as Swan 4152, it became an American number 1 hit on March 21, 1964.

Tennyson's poem " The Dying Swan " is a poetic evocation of the beauty of the supposed song and so full of detail as to imply that he had actually heard it:

Finnish composer Jean Sibelius's tone poem The Swan of Tuonela in a famous solo, uses a cor anglais to play the dying song of the legendary swan of Tuonela.
