Gavin MacLeod ( born Allan George See, February 28, 1931 ) is an American actor notable for playing Joseph " Happy " Haines on McHale's Navy, Murray Slaughter on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Captain Merrill Stubing on The Love Boat.

MacLeod's role as Murray Slaughter on The Mary Tyler Moore Show won him lasting fame, and two Golden Globe nominations, followed by another three nominations for his The Love Boat work.

Whale directed over a dozen films in other genres, including what is considered the definitive film version of the musical Show Boat ( 1936 ).

Whale, wary of doing two horror films in a row and concerned that directing Dracula's Daughter could interfere with his plans for the remake of Show Boat, instead convinced Laemmle to buy the rights to a novel called The Hangover Murders.

Whale immediately went to work on Show Boat ( 1936 ).

The 1936 Show Boat, faithfully adapted from the original stage production, is considered the definitive film version of the musical, but became unavailable following the 1951 remake.

Whale used a similar technique during the Ol ' Man River sequence in Show Boat, in which the camera tracked around Paul Robeson as he sang the song.

As recent revivals of Show Boat, Oklahoma !, Carousel, and The King and I in London and New York show, Hammerstein was one of the more tough-minded and socially conscious American musical theater artists.

* Warner Brothers produces the first movie with a soundtrack Don Juan in 1926, followed by the first Part-Talkie The Jazz Singer in 1927, the first All-Talking movie Lights of New York in 1928 and the first All-Color All-Talking movie On with the Show, 1929.

The musical Show Boat ( from 1927 until 1946 ) features the word and " nigger " as originally integral to the lyrics of " Ol ' Man River " and " Cotton Blossom "; although deleted from the cinema versions, it is included in the 1988 EMI recording of the original score.

Her novels were especially popular and included the Pulitzer Prize-winning So Big ( 1924 ), Show Boat ( 1926 ; made into the celebrated 1927 musical ), Cimarron ( 1929 ; made into the 1931 film which won the Academy Award for Best Picture ), and Giant ( 1952 ; made into the 1956 Hollywood movie ).

Leaving these comparatively frivolous entertainments behind, and taking the drama a giant step forward, Show Boat, premiered on December 27, 1927 at the Ziegfeld Theatre, representing a complete integration of book and score, with dramatic themes, as told through the music, dialogue, setting and movement, woven together more seamlessly than in previous musicals.

This led to the odd situation of having, for example, a 1928 recording of the London cast of Show Boat, but no recording with the actual 1927 Broadway cast, and a recording of the London cast of Sigmund Romberg's The Desert Song, but not of the 1926 Broadway cast-even though both of these shows are Broadway musicals, rather than British ones.

In 1927 ( at the Brussels Motor Show ) the company announced a 1594 cc pushrod ohv six-cylinder with twin carburettors, as well as in-unit engine / gearbox construction.
