Simon Dubnow, who was ambivalent toward Zionism, formulated Jewish Autonomism which was adopted in eastern Europe by Jewish political parties such as the Bund and his own Folkspartei before World War II.

There were non-Zionist left-wing forms of Jewish nationalism, such as territorialism ( which called for a Jewish national homeland, but not necessarily in Palestine ), autonomism ( which called for non-territorial national rights for Jews in multinational empires ) and the folkism, advocated by Simon Dubnow, ( which celebrated the Jewish culture of the Yiddish-speaking masses ).

Simon Dubnow

Simon Dubnow ( alternatively spelled Dubnov, / Semyon Markovich Dubnov ; Shimen Dubnov ; September 10, 1860 – December 8, 1941 ) was a Jewish historian, writer and activist.

Simon Dibnow was born Shimon Meyerovich Dubnow ( Шимон Меерович Дубнов ) to a large poor family in the Belarusian town of Mstsislaw ( Mahilyow Voblast ).

Several friends then buried Simon Dubnow in the old cemetery of the Riga ghetto.

In the cruel atmosphere of this ongoing political crisis in the region, Simon Dubnow wrote his celebrated histories and played an active rôle in Jewish affairs.
