Ian Brown ( at the time the bassist ) and guitarist John Squire, who knew each other from Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, formed a short-lived Clash-inspired band called The Patrol in 1980 along with singer / guitarist Andy Couzens and drummer Simon Wolstencroft.

After recording several demo tapes with Simon Wolstencroft ( later of The Fall ) on drums, Morrissey and Marr recruited drummer Mike Joyce in the autumn of 1982.

In 1976, with Roxy on a hiatus, Jobson recorded an obscure solo single, " Yesterday Boulevard " b / w On a Still Night ", playing all instruments himself with the exception of drums ( by Simon Phillips ).
