In 1244 Sir Ralphe de Norwich founded an Augustinian priory at Chetwode.
While he was away Desert Column was formed and on 7 December 1916, five days before Chauvel's return, Murray appointed the newly promoted Lieutenant General Sir Phillip Chetwode commander of the Column.
Its advanced troops — including Chauvel's Anzac Mounted Division — became part of the Desert Column under Major General Sir Philip Chetwode, a British cavalry baronet.

Chetwode was the son of Sir George Chetwode, 6th Baronet, and Alice Jane Bass daughter of Michael Thomas Bass the brewer.
With the war in Europe become bogged down in trench warfare, Chetwode was lucky to be transferred to the near East in December 1916 commanding the Desert Column in the Egyptian Expeditionary Force under Sir Archibald Murray.
