Wilson's surviving home tapes document his initial efforts singing with various friends and family, including a song that would later be recorded in the studio by The Beach Boys, " Sloop John B ", as well as " Bermuda Shorts " and a hymn titled " Good News ".

One of the first bands to craft a distinctly American sound in response to the British Invasion was The Beach Boys ; while not a folk rock band themselves, they directly influenced the genre, and at the height of the folk rock boom in 1966 had a hit with a cover of the 1920s West Indian folk song " Sloop John B ", which they had learned from The Kingston Trio, who, in turn, had learned it from The Weavers.

In this milieu more traditional Bahamas performers such as Joseph Spence, have still enjoyed successful careers playing junkanoo, Christian hymns and the ant ' ems of the local sponge fisherman, which include " Sloop John B ", later made famous by The Beach Boys.

During the Pet Sounds sessions, it was Jardine who suggested to Brian Wilson that the group record " Sloop John B ," a lovingly remembered song from his folk days.

Al Jardine has authored one book, Sloop John B: A Pirate's Tale, illustrated by Jimmy Pickering ( Milk & Cookies Press, 2005 ).

The book is a children's story about a boy's Caribbean adventure with his grandfather, reworded from the original folk lyric of the song " Sloop John B ".

Perhaps reflecting on " Sloop John B " and feeling that lightning could strike twice, Al Jardine suggested to Brian that they work on another folk standard, " Cotton Fields.

The Sloop Inn, which lies on the wharf was a fisherman's pub for many centuries and is dated to " circa 1312 ", making it one of the oldest inns in Cornwall.
