Bali Jatra of Sonepur in Orissa, India is also an annual festival celebrated in the month of Aswina ( September – October ) when animal sacrifice is an integral part of the ritual worship of deities namely Samaleswari, Sureswari and Khambeswari.

Subarnapur District (), also called Sonepur District or Sonapur District, is an administrative district of Orissa state in eastern India.

Their suzerainty extended from the modern Sambalpur, Sonepur to the Bastar and Koraput regions and they enjoyed control until the beginning of the 14th century CE.

The important towns in the Indian part of the Gandak river are the Valmikinagar ( Bhainsalotan )- location of Gandak Barrage, Bagaha, Bettia ( district hqrs & field directorate of Valmiki Tiger Project ), Harinagar ( Ramnagar ), Hajipur ( across the Ganges 10 km from Patna ) and Sonepur ( also Known as Harihar Kshetra ), near Patna.

Indrabhuti, the king of Sambalpur founded Vajrayana while his sister who was married to Prince ( Yuvaraja ) Jalendra of Lankapuri ( Sonepur ) founded Sahajayana.

The Madala panji ( The Temple Chronicles ) identifies this place with the village Gopali of Sonepur district of Orissa.

Pandaveswar, Kajora, Jhanjra Bankola, Kenda, Sonepur, Kunustoria, Satgram, Ningha, Sripur, Sodepur and Salanpur are the major coal areas around Asansol.

" The growth of literature at Sonepur can be traced to Charyapada, to Matsyendranath and Daripada of the Natha cult.

The Nath literature of Sonepur seems to have set the tone and temper of the literature the successive ages pursued.

The Telen River which rises in the north of Nabarangpur District forms its geographical boundary with Kalahandi District and finally unites with a bigger Mahanadi River in Sonepur town.

In some of the insctiptions found in Balangir and Sonepur district, it has been mentioned that this part of the land was known as Attavika during Ashoka ’ s invasion of Kalinga in 261 B. C.

Another annual event is the Feria y Exposición Ganadera or Cattle Expo and Fair.

The Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia, established 1831, held its first annual agricultural show, the Fair and Cattle Show, at Guildford on 7 November 1834.

Various markets are held in the Market Hall, for example: Tuesdays – retail market, which also stretches into the town hall car park and temporarily the Cattle Market, while Brewery Yard car park is regenerated ; Wednesday – flea market ; 4th Thursday of the month a farmers ' market ; Friday – retail market ; Saturday – retail market ( also in the town hall car park ); 3rd Sunday of the month – antique fair ; 2nd Saturday – craft fair.
