From its inception under Taizu, the Song Dynasty alternated between warfare and diplomacy with the ethnic Khitans of the Liao Dynasty in the northeast and with the Tanguts of the Western Xia Dynasty in the northwest.

Their version of " The Lumberjack Song " was adapted for a Spanish audience so that the singer confessed not to having always wanted to be a lumberjack but having always wanted to join the Guardia Civil, the Spanish gendarmerie.

Lys Assia ( born Rosa Mina Schärer, 3 March 1926, Rupperswil, Aargau, Switzerland ) is a Swiss singer who won the first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956.

He is the lead singer of R & B group Dru Hill, and has also released solo material, including his successful first solo album Unleash the Dragon which included the hit single " Thong Song ".

In 1951 Sherman recorded a 78-rpm single with veteran singer Sylvia Froos which included the songs " A Satchel and a Seck ," parodying " A Bushel and a Peck " from Guys and Dolls, and " Jake's Song.

* March 25 – The 17th Eurovision Song Contest, held in the Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Scotland, is won by German-based Greek singer Vicky Leandros, representing Luxembourg with the song Après Toi.

* April 30 – The Eurovision Song Contest, held in the RDS Simmonscourt Pavilion, Dublin, is won by French-Canadian singer Celine Dion, representing Switzerland with the song " Ne partez pas sans moi ".

** Turkish singer Sertab Erener wins the Eurovision Song Contest, held in Riga, Latvia, with the song " Everyway That I Can ".

* March 29 – Lulu ( the singer, not the elephant ) performs Boom Bang-a-Bang at the Eurovision Song Contest 1969 in Madrid, and ends up in a 4-way tie for 1st place, with 18 votes.

The album also features one of the few Partridge Family recordings featuring Shirley Jones as the lead singer (" The Christmas Song ").

The Song Dynasty is considered by many to be classical China's high point in science and technology, with innovative scholar-officials such as Su Song ( 1020 – 1101 ) and Shen Kuo ( 1031 – 1095 ).

Medieval Song Dynasty painters such as Lin Tinggui and his Luohan Laundering ( housed in the Smithsonian Freer Gallery of Art ) of the 12th century are excellent examples of Buddhist ideas fused into classical Chinese artwork.

During the Chinese Song Dynasty ( 960-1279 AD ), not only landscape art was improved upon, but portrait painting became more standardized and sophisticated than before ( for example, refer to Emperor Huizong of Song ), and reached its classical age maturity during the Ming Dynasty ( 1368-1644 AD ).

In Song Dynasty China and the classical Islamic world, this century marked the high point for both classical Chinese civilization, science and technology, and classical Islamic science, philosophy, technology and literature.

This period also represents a high point in classical Chinese science and technology, with figures such as Su Song and Shen Kuo, as well as the age where the matured form of the Chinese pagoda was accomplished in Chinese architecture.

* May – Chinese encyclopedist, Song Yingxing, publishes his Tiangong Kaiwu ( Exploitation of the Works of Nature ), considered one of the most valuable encyclopedias of classical China.

Plant's lyrics with Led Zeppelin were often mystical, philosophical and spiritual, alluding to events in classical and Norse mythology, such as " Immigrant Song ", which refers to Valhalla and Viking conquests.

By the time of the Tang and Song dynasties ( 618 – 1279 ), people began to write in their vernacular dialects in the form of bianwen () and yulu (), and the spoken language was completely distinct from the still-maintained written standard of classical Chinese.

Pieces of music played for the music round may be classical or popular-for example, on 25 July 2011, the pieces played were winners of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Performers of classical music of note include Catherine Hayes, ( 1818 – 1861 ) Ireland's first great international prima donna and the first Irish woman to perform at La Scala in Milan ; tenor John McCormack ( 1884 – 1945 ), the most celebrated tenor of his day ; opera singer Margaret Burke-Sheridan ( 1889 – 1958 ); tenor Josef Locke ( 1917 – 1999 ) achieved global success and was the subject of the 1991 film Hear My Song ; the concert flautist Sir James Galway and pianist Barry Douglas.

Their songs celebrated transportation (" Slow Train ", " The Last Tram ", " A Transport of Delight ," the last-named a tribute to the London double-decker omnibus ), animal life (" The Wart-Hog ", " The Gnu ", " The Elephant ", and many others ), common inconveniences in " The Gas-Man Cometh ", " Motor Perpetuo " ( about parking a car ), " Song of Reproduction " ( about hi-fidelity phonographs ), and even classical music, with an irreverent " Guide to Britten " and a setting of lyrics by Flanders to the finale of Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 4 (" Ill Wind ").

Pop singer Ayumi Hamasaki also performed a classical version of her single " A Song Is Born " on the event's opening day.

* TRT 1 ( launched January 1968 )-General entertainment channel with a broad schedule featuring local and foreign series, Turkish and Hollywood cinema, live shows with Turkish folk music, Turkish classical music and pop music, live sport, news & current affairs plus special events such as the Eurovision Song Contest.

The Ashtavakra Gita ( Sanskrit in Devanagari: अष ् ट ा वक ् रग ी त ा; IAST: aṣṭāvakragītā ) or the Song of Ashtavakra is a classical Advaita Vedanta scripture.

Of Tausig's original compositions and numerous arrangements of classical works the following may be mentioned: Deux Études de Concert, replacing an earlier pianoforte transcription of his symphonic ballad Das Geisterschiff ; Ungarische Zigeunerweisen, a composition for pianoforte ; Nouvelles Soirées de Vienne ; Tägliche Studien, finger exercises of high value ; a selection of studies from Clementi's Gradus ad Parnassum ; a transcription of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 ; and adaptations of Weber's Invitation to the Dance, and of six Beethoven quartets ; transcriptions of Schubert's Marche Militaire No. 1 in D and of Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, The Ride of the Valkyries, and Siegmund's Love Song.

Ouyang Xiu once again promoted the use of classical prose in the Song dynasty.

During the Song ( Sung ) dynasty ( 960 – 1279 ), Neo-Confucianism — an interpretation of classical Confucian doctrine that addressed Buddhist and Daoist issues fourished.

In addition to his success as a character actor in classical drama, he was known for his work as a singer and comic actor in revue and musicals, and in one-man shows about George Bernard Shaw and Gilbert and Sullivan, and in cinema and television films, notably Ken Russell's Song of Summer.
