Akio Morita ( 盛田 昭夫 Morita Akio, January 26, 1921, Nagoya, Aichi – October 3, 1999, Tokyo ) was a Japanese businessman and co-founder of Sony Corporation along with Masaru Ibuka.

On May 7, 1946, Morita and Ibuka founded Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha ( Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation, the forerunner of Sony Corporation ) with about 20 employees and initial capital of ¥ 190, 000.

Morita was an advocate for all the products made by the Sony Corporation.

In 1960, the Sony Corporation of America ( SONAM, currently abbreviated as SCA ) was established in the United States.

In 1961, Sony Corporation was the first Japanese company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange, in the form of American Depositary Receipts ( ADRs ), which are traded over-the-counter.

Although its Academy Award was presented to Taiwan, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was in fact an international co-production between companies in four regions: the Chinese company China Film Co-Production Corporation ; the American companies Columbia Pictures Film Production Asia, Sony Pictures Classics and Good Machine ; the Hong Kong company EDKO Film ; and the Taiwanese Zoom Hunt International Productions Company, Ltd ; as well as the unspecified United China Vision, and Asia Union Film & Entertainment Ltd., created solely for this film.

Also in honor of Bardeen, Sony Corporation endowed a $ 53 million John Bardeen professorial chair at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, beginning in 1990.

The RCA trademark is used by Sony Music Entertainment and Technicolor, which licenses the name to other companies like Audiovox and TCL Corporation for products descended from that common ancestor.

Development of EverQuest began in 1996 when Sony Interactive Studios America ( SISA ) executive John Smedley secured funding for a 3D game much like text-based MUDs following the successful launch of Meridian 59 the previous year.

In anticipation of PlayStation's launch Sony Interactive Studios America had made the decision to focus primarily on console titles under the banner 989 Studios while spinning off its sole computer title, EverQuest, which was ready to launch, to a new computer game division named Redeye ( renamed Verant Interactive ).

The only clear-set rule is that ESRB AO-rated games will not be licensed on Nintendo consoles in North America, a practice which is also enforced by Sony and Microsoft, its two greatest competitors in the present market.

In 2007, Sony announced that it would no longer market or sell Trinitrons in the USA or Canada, but continue to sell the Trinitron in China, India, and regions of South America using tubes delivered from their Singapore plant.

It is also aired live in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico by XHRIO-TV in English because it is a Fox affiliate that serves a US market across the border ; in the rest of the country, as of the rest of Latin America, the show is broadcast and subtitled by Sony Entertainment Television.

Bertelsmann Music Group, ( BMG ), was a division of Bertelsmann before its completion of sale of the majority of its assets to Japan's Sony Corporation of America on October 1, 2008.

Bertelsmann sold its 50 % share of Sony BMG to Sony Corporation of America for a total of $ 1. 5 billion, and the company was renamed back to Sony Music Entertainment Inc.

On 28 February 2008, Sony made a similar announcement, of impending sale to a consortium led by American investment banking giant ( now bank holding company ) Morgan Stanley.

with Warner Bros. Television holding a 33 % stake in the new joint venture with Sony Pictures ( titles were later picked up by rival Seven in 2011 ).

Such a holding would tread too close to the Sony safe harbor.

Publicly traded Xybernaut tried forging alliances with companies such as IBM and Sony in order to make wearable computing widely available, but in 2005 their stock was delisted and the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection amid financial scandal and federal investigation.

The names " Walkman ", " Pressman ", " Watchman ", " Scoopman ", " Discman ", and " Talkman " are trademarks of Sony, and have been applied to a wide range of portable entertainment devices manufactured by the company.

On January 26, 2006 Sony announced that it would discontinue AIBO and several other products as of March, 2006 in Sony's effort to make the company more profitable.

In 2012, the company announced that Sony and Fujifilm offer of forming a capital alliance and the company would downsizing imaging business portfolio and then will focus on Mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera ( MILC ).

In the first few months, GSN's commercials consisted of public service announcements ( PSAs ), GSN promos and commercials related to Sony, the parent company of the network.

GSN's rerun programming comes primarily from two sources: FremantleMedia and GSN parent company Sony.

Because Hawk ( in conjunction with other unsuccessful films from the same studio ) had lost so much money, the Sony Corporation had to salvage TriStar by purchasing its remaining stock, and by reorganizing the company as part of the recently-formed Sony Studios.

There was also a battery recall in August 2006, as a result of a Dell laptop catching fire which caused much negative attention for the company, although later Sony was found to be responsible for the faulty batteries.
