Johnny Torrio and his lieutenant, Al " Scarface " Capone, moved to the South side of Chicago, absorbed the territory and pushed the Southside O ' Donnells ( an Irish group of brothers that held a piece of the Southside and claimed it as their turf ) out of the way.

In the early seventies, he was a journeyman guitarist ( working as a sideman for The Dovells ) as well as a founding member of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes and several of Bruce Springsteen's early bands.

Van Zandt subsequently became a songwriter and producer for fellow Jersey shore act Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes in the mid-to late-1970s, penning their signature song " I Don't Wanna Go Home ", co-writing other songs for them with Springsteen, and producing their most-acclaimed record, Hearts of Stone.

Rosenberg and Pender had played with The Miami Horns, and had a long joint history with Weinberg from touring or recording together with Springsteen, Southside Johnny, Little Steven, Gary U. S. Bonds, and Darlene Love.

An anecdote relates that Munthe was discussing publication of The Story of San Michele with his publisher, John Murray, in the garden at Southside, and Murray related that his ancestor of the same name had sat in the same garden with Lord Byron, discussing publication of Byron's works.
