Spike Jonze ( born Adam Spiegel ; October 22, 1969 ) is an American director, producer, screenwriter and actor, whose work includes music videos, commercials, film and television.

When he was in junior high and high school, Spiegel hung out at Bethesda Community Store, where the former owner Mike Henderson gave him his nickname " Spike Jonze " in reference to Spike Jones.

Spike Jonze was part of the Detour-Moleskine project in New York in 2007.

TMBG also contributed a track to the 2004 Future Soundtrack For America compilation, a project compiled by John Flansburgh with the help of Spike Jonze and Barsuk Records.

Its music video, starring Spike Jonze, won numerous awards.

He adopted the nom de guerre " Spike " based on his habit of torturing people with railroad spikes – possibly prompted by criticism of his poetry: " I'd rather have a railroad spike through my head than listen to that awful stuff.
