The Roman Catholic Abbey of St Mary and St Petroc, formerly belonging to the Canons Regular of the Lateran was built in 1965 next to the already existing seminary.

A church was planned in the 1930s but delayed by World War II: the Church of St Mary and St Petroc was eventually consecrated in 1965: it was built next to the already existing seminary.

In 979 AD a Benedictine abbey, the Abbey of St Mary and St Melor, was founded on what may have been the site of a previous monastery by Dowager Queen Ælfthryth.

She was buried on 11 September 1291 in the Abbey of St Mary and St Melor, Amesbury on 9 December.

It was also said that she died at Corfe Castle. Considering the association between Amesbury and the Plantagenets, Eleanor's final choice of burial place was probably a sign of submission and loyalty to her dynasty, but it was more likely her last protest about the fate of herself and her brother Arthur, as the abbey was for the Virgin and St Melor, a young Breton prince murdered by his wicked uncle who usurped his throne.

She was interred at the gravesite of her first husband at St. Mary and St. Melor Parish Church in Amesbury, Wiltshire, England.

The parish was named after St Melor a Breton and Cornish saint, by the monks of Mont Saint-Michel, who established a priory there in the early 11th century.
