Schweitzer found many New Testament references to apparently show that 1st-century Christians believed literally in the imminent fulfillment of the promise of the World's ending, within the lifetime of Jesus's original followers, He noted that in the gospel of Mark, Jesus speaks of a " tribulation ", with his coming in the clouds with great power and glory " ( St Mark ), and states when it will happen: " This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled " ( St Matthew, 24: 34 ) ( or, " have taken place " ( Luke 21: 32 )): " All these things shall come upon this generation " ( Matthew 23: 36 ).

In 1619 when he moved to Utrecht, his brother-in-law van der Ast entered the Utrecht Guild of St. Luke, where the renowned painter Abraham Bloemaert had just become dean.

The painter Roelandt Savery ( 1576 – 1639 ) entered the St. Luke ’ s guild in Utrecht at about the same time.

A mile from Bolventor there was a chapel of St Luke ( from the 13th to the early 16th century ): the font is now at the church of Tideford.

Among the teachings of Jesus Christ in the Gospel of Luke and the Gospel of Matthew, the message to his followers that one should " Turn the other cheek " and his example in the story Pericope Adulterae, in which Jesus intervenes in the stoning of an adulteress, are generally accepted as his condemnation of physical retaliation ( though most scholars agree that the latter passage was " certainly not part of the original text of St John's Gospel ") More militant Christians consider Romans 13: 3 – 4 to support the death penalty.

When the Church of St. Luke in the Fields was founded in 1820 it stood in fields south of the road ( now Christopher Street ) that led from Greenwich Lane ( now Greenwich Avenue ) down to a landing on the North River.

In later tradition the number of icons of Mary attributed to Luke would greatly multiply ; the Salus Populi Romani, the Theotokos of Vladimir, the Theotokos Iverskaya of Mount Athos, the Theotokos of Tikhvin, the Theotokos of Smolensk and the Black Madonna of Częstochowa are examples, and another is in the cathedral on St Thomas Mount, which is believed to be one of the seven painted by St. Luke the Evangelist and brought to India by St. Thomas.

# Arguments were drawn from the miraculous Acheiropoieta, the supposed icon of the Virgin painted with her approval by St Luke, and other miraculous occurrences around icons, that demonstrated divine approval of Iconodule practices.

His 1960 avant-garde Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima for string orchestra brought him to international attention, and this success was followed by acclaim for his choral St. Luke Passion.

Thus late medieval Guilds of St Luke in the cities of Flanders, or the " Accademia di San Luca " ( Academy of St. Luke ) in Rome — imitated in many other European cities during the 16th century — gathered together and protected painters.

The tradition also has support from the Saint Thomas Christians of India who claim to still have one of the Theotokos icons that St. Luke painted and which St. Thomas brought to India.

During World II the winter games were canceled but after that time the Winter Games have been held in St. Moritz ( 1948 ), Innsbruck, Austria ( 1964 and 1976 ), Grenoble, France, ( 1968 ), Albertville, France, ( 1992 ), and Torino, Italy, ( 2006 ).

Another was unveiled at St Mildred's Church, Bread St, London, in 1932 ; that church was destroyed in the London Blitz in 1940, but the principal elements of the monument were re-erected in St Mary-le-Bow at the west end of Watling Street, near Saint Paul's Cathedral, in 1968.

Her distrust of the government showed in early 1968 when she was elected to carry the Eugene McCarthy banner, in support of the Eugene McCarthy Presidential Campaign, for her St. Louis County precinct.

The back to basics trend was also evident in The Rolling Stones ' albums starting from Beggar's Banquet ( 1968 ) to Exile on Main St. ( 1972 ).

These developments — re-evaluation of the entire Western value system ( love, marriage, popular culture, shift from industrial to service economy ) that took place since the 1950s and 1960s, with a peak in the Social Revolution of 1968 — are described with the term Postmodernity, Influences on postmodern thought, Paul Lützeler ( St. Louis ) as opposed to Postmodernism, a term referring to an opinion or movement.

In 1968 the National Joint Action Committee was formed by members of the Guild of Undergraduates at the St Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies, under the leadership of Geddes Granger.

By the early 1960s films based on commando missions like The Gift Horse ( 1952 ) based on the St. Nazaire Raid, and Ill Met by Moonlight ( 1956 ) had begun to inspire fictional adventure films such as The Guns of Navarone ( 1961 ), The Train ( 1964 ), The Dirty Dozen ( 1967 ), Where Eagles Dare ( 1968 ) and Hannibal Brooks ( 1969 ), which used the war as the backdrop for spectacular action films.

The East London Maternity Hospital in Stepney which was 2. 5 miles from St Mary-le-Bow was in use from 1884 to 1968.

On October 12, 1968, the city erected a granite marker at the site believed to be Point du Sable's grave in the third St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery.

In 1968 the former confessio ( tomb ) of St. Nicholas was roofed over.

Schweitzer notes that St. Paul apparently believed in the immediacy of the " Second Coming of Jesus ": " Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord " ( 1 Thessalonians 4. 17 ).

St Paul spoke of the ' last times ': " Brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none " ( 1 Corinthians 7: 29 ); " God ... Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son " ( Hebrews 1: 2 ).

Similarly in St Peter: " Christ .. Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you " ( 1 Peter 1: 20 ), and " But the end of all things is at hand " ( 1 Peter 4: 7 ).

During this persecution many bishops were exiled to the other ends of the Empire, ( e. g., St Hilary of Poitiers to the Eastern provinces ).

The Mariner's Cross is also referred to as St. Clement's Cross, in reference to the way this saint was martyred ( being tied to an anchor and thrown from a boat into the Black Sea in 102 ).

Common meter hymns were interchangeable with a variety of tunes ; more than twenty musical settings of " Amazing Grace " circulated with varying popularity until 1835 when William Walker assigned Newton's words to a traditional song named " New Britain ", which was itself an amalgamation of two melodies (" Gallaher " and " St. Mary ") first published in the Columbian Harmony by Charles H. The ' far-away light ' () is a reference to St Elmo's Fire, an electrical discharge supposed by ancient Greek mariners to be an epiphany of the Dioscuri, but the meaning of the line was obscured by gaps in the papyrus until reconstructed by a modern scholar — such reconstructions are typical of the extant poetry ( see Scholars, fragments and sources below ).
