Eastern Berlin has a distinctly different visual aspect, partly because of the greater survival of prewar façades and streetscapes, some still showing signs of wartime damage, and partly because of the distinctive style of urban Stalinist architecture used in the GDR.

In power until his death in 1953, Stalin led the USSR during the period of post-war reconstruction, marked by the dominance of Stalinist architecture.

A trip to the Soviet Union to study Stalinist architecture also left a marked impression.

The beginning of the 1950s saw a rapid population growth, to which the Soviet administration responded by constructing large-scale housing and palaces in the style of Stalinist architecture.

Neoclassicism and neo-Renaissance persisted in less demanding residential and office projects until 1955, when Nikita Khrushchev put an end to expensive Stalinist architecture.

Sharing some elements with Stalinist grandiosity, GDR architecture blends into the regionally different styles of post-war city-building of the world: Panelák suburbs were more a rule than an exception and there was a heavy reliance on the aesthetics of the atomic age, featuring a tendency against edges and corners as a semi-conscious attempt to do away with rectangular shapes from Nazism, without much devaluating its likenesses in Stalinist architecture.

One buzzword often heard in this context is Socialist Classicism, while the Western reference to the same phenomenon is Stalinist architecture.

A notable boulevard in Berlin's East is Karl-Marx-Allee, which was built primarily in the 1950s in Stalinist Classicism architecture with decorative buildings.

The Station house building faced south and the architecture included both a Chinese traditional style and the Soviet Stalinist architecture 。 The twelve passenger waiting rooms comprised a total area of fourteen thousand square meters and was able to accommodate 14, 000 waiting passengers.

According to several Western historians, Stalinist agricultural policies were a key factor in causing the Soviet famine of 1932 – 1933, which the Ukrainian government now calls the Holodomor, recognizing it as an act of genocide.

In his self-portrait of 1933 he represented himself in a traditional way — the only way permitted by Stalinist cultural policy — but signed the picture with a tiny black-over-white square.

There was Western support of the anti-Bolshevik White movement in the Russian Civil War, the 1926 Soviet funding of a British general workers strike causing Britain to break relations with the Soviet Union, Stalin's 1927 declaration of peaceful coexistence with capitalist countries " receding into the past ," conspiratorial allegations during the 1928 Shakhty show trial of a planned British-and French-led coup d ' état, the American refusal to recognize the Soviet Union until 1933 and the Stalinist Moscow Trials of the Great Purge, with allegations of British, French, Japanese and Nazi German espionage.

Stalinist architecture ( – Stalin's Empire style or – Stalin's Neo-renaissance ), also referred to as Stalinist Gothic, or Socialist Classicism, is a term given to architecture of the Soviet Union under the leadership of Joseph Stalin, between 1933, when Boris Iofan's draft for Palace of the Soviets was officially approved, and 1955, when Nikita Khrushchev condemned " excesses " of the past decades and disbanded the Soviet Academy of Architecture.

Several groups were established before the congress, which either opposed the Stalinist leadership ( the Ryutin Group ) or opposed socio-economic policies of the Stalinist leadership ( the Syrtsov – Lominandze Group, Eismont – Tolmachev Group and the group headed by Alexander Petrovich Smirnov amongst others ).

In 1937 – 38, a campaign against alleged enemies of the Stalinist regime culminated in the Great Purge, a period of mass repression against the population in which hundreds of thousands of people were executed.

In contrast, Stalin and allies proposed that alliances with capitalist political parties were essential to realising a revolution where Communists were too few ; said Stalinist practice failed, especially in the Northern Expedition portion of the Chinese Revolution ( 1925 – 1927 ), wherein it resulted in the right-wing Kuomintang ’ s massacre of the Chinese Communist Party ; nonetheless, despite the failure, Stalin ’ s policy of mixed-ideology political alliances, became Comintern policy.

Imports of Soviet goods to Germany fell to 223 million Reichsmarks in 1934 as the more isolationist Stalinist regime asserted power and the abandonment of post – World War I Treaty of Versailles military controls decreased Germany's reliance on Soviet imports.

However, the government is still sometimes referred to as Marxist – Leninist — or, more commonly, Stalinist — due to its political and economic structure ( see History of North Korea ).

A loyal Stalinist, he was promoted rapidly as other leaders fell victim to Joseph Stalin's Great Purge of 1937 – 38.

Upon his return to Poland in 1944 – together with hardliner Bolesław Bierut and the Jewish economist Hilary Minc – Berman formed a triumvirate of Stalinist leaders in postwar Poland.

The standardized buildings of 1948 – 1955 had the same housing quality as the Stalinist classics and are classified as such by real estate agents, but are excluded from the scope of Stalinist architecture.

A change from Stalinist architecture to standard prefabricated concrete is usually associated with Khrushchev's reign and particularly the November 1955 decree On liquidation of excesses ... ( November, 1955 ).

The decree On liquidation of excesses ... ( November 4, 1955 ) provides some data on the cost of Stalinist excesses, estimated at 30 – 33 % of total costs.
