Franklin became a national hero in America when he spearheaded the effort to have Parliament repeal the unpopular Stamp Act.

So it was that New Castle lawyer Thomas McKean denounced the Stamp Act in the strongest terms, and Kent County native John Dickinson became the " Penman of the Revolution.

It carried the words, " No Stamp Act, No Sedition Act, No Alien Bills, No Land Tax, downfall to the Tyrants of America ; peace and retirement to the President ; Love Live the Vice President ," referring to then-President John Adams and Vice President Thomas Jefferson.

The American colonies also used the idea of a Liberty Tree to celebrate their own acts of insurrection against the British, starting with the Stamp Act riot in 1765.

The riot culminated in the hanging in effigy of two Stamp Act politicians on a large elm tree.

In 1765 Randolph found himself at odds with a freshman burgess, Patrick Henry, over the matter of a response to the Stamp Act.

The House appointed Randolph to draft objections to the act, but his more conservative plan was trumped when Henry obtained passage of five of his seven Virginia Stamp Act Resolutions.

At the Stamp Act Congress of 1765, McKean and Caesar Rodney represented Delaware.

McKean quickly became one of the most influential members of the Stamp Act Congress.

Parliament believed that these acts, such as the Stamp Act of 1765 and the Townshend Acts of 1767, were a legitimate means of having the colonies pay their fair share of the costs to keep the colonies in the British Empire.

In the following year he supported with great power the proposal of the Rockingham administration for the repeal of the American Stamp Act, arguing that it was unconstitutional to impose taxes upon the colonies.

The cult of this noblest of Whigs, “ the Genius of England and the Comet of his Age ,” was well advanced toward idolatry at least five years before the Stamp Act.

During the legal and public campaigns against the writs of assistance and Stamp Act 1765, Bonham's Case was given as a justification for nullifying the legislation, and in the income tax case of 1895, Joseph Hodges Choate used Coke's argument that a tax upon the income of property is a tax on the property itself to have the Supreme Court of the United States declare the Wilson – Gorman Tariff Act unconstitutional, leading to the passage of the Sixteenth Amendment.

The Stamp Act 1765 ( short title Duties in American Colonies Act 1765 ; 5 George III, c. 12 ) was a direct tax imposed by the British Parliament specifically on the colonies of British America.

The Stamp Act was passed by Parliament on March 22, 1765 with an effective date of November 1, 1765.

Henry led the opposition to the Stamp Act and his resolutions, proposed May 30, 1765, were passed in the form of the Virginia Resolves.

Howard became the only prominent American to publicly support the Stamp Act in his pamphlet " A Colonist's Defence of Taxation " ( 1765 ).

The Stamp Act Congress was held in New York in October 1765.
