The Maritime Alps are drained by the rivers Roya, Var and Verdon and their tributaries on the French side ; by the Stura di Demonte and other tributaries of the Tanaro and Po on the Italian side.

The first a pastoral opera, L ' amore innocente ( Innocent Love ) was a light hearted comedy set in the Austrian mountains, and the second was based on an episode from Cervantes Don Quixote – Don Chisciotte alle nozze di Gamace ( Don Quixote at the Marriage of Camacho ).

His early operas ( Gli equivoci nel sembiante 1679 ; L ’ honestà negli amori 1680, containing the famous aria " Già il sole dal Gange "; Il Pompeo 1683, containing the well-known airs " O cessate di piagarmi " and " Toglietemi la vita ancor ," and others down to about 1685 ) retain the older cadences in their recitatives, and a considerable variety of neatly constructed forms in their charming little arias, accompanied sometimes by the string quartet, treated with careful elaboration, sometimes with the continuo alone.

Many poems and plays, and two operas ( Les Abencérages, by Luigi Cherubini, and L ' esule di Granata, by Giacomo Meyerbeer ) mention the legend, but the whole story is doubtful, because the best historians do not mention it.

He had come to realize that the Italian stage needed reforming ; adopting Molière as his model, he went to work in earnest and in 1738 produced his first real comedy, L ' uomo di mondo (" The Man of the World ").

Since the Renaissance the myth of Diana has often been represented in the visual and dramatic arts, including the opera L ' arbore di Diana.
